How to use a tension gauge like this for Altenrator/AC belts

I bought this on amazon, but I realized i don't understand how to use it and what is the correct measurement I should read.

I know ballpark the belt should move only between 1/2 to 1/4 inch no?
but no idea how this tool works

Push on the belt with your finger, if it moves about half an inch you're good. If it squeaks while running it's too loose, if it whines a bunch it's probably too tight.

Neither belt on the 911 is super sensitive to tension.

For another way to test, the fan belt should be just about tight enough such that you can turn the engine over by turning the fan (with a little squeeze on the belt to help get through the compression strokes).

That tool was intended for flat toothed belts and maybe serpentine belts.

The official method is to use your thumb.
