3.2 Motronic on 2.7 Block? Whats wrong here

Hi Team,

Looking at buying a 959 replica to convert back to a 911.

I have stumbled across an issue though and would like anyones thoughts on this.

The engine number matches the manufacture date of the car (1976).

Engine Number : 63604941

How ever the engine clearly has a 3.2 intake and MAF system on it.

So, am I right in thinking, some how a 2.7 block is running a 3.2 intake system and ECU, or they have done some machining to the block to accept 3.2 cylinders?

Seems odd to have a 3.2 ECU map running a 2.7, plus all the changes required to make the DME work (Sensors etc).

Thanks

How are they running the reference sensors? Before about late 1982 there weren't any provisions for the flywheel sensors. You don't need the 3.2 cylinders to run the motronic but you need some way of positioning the reference sensors.

The owner of the car bought it as is, so I am finding it hard to get any information from him. I might just have to send it to get a pre purchase inspection and have the experts tell me what is going on. Agree with your comments though, from what I have read, the reference sensor and fly wheel (I think?) would have to be modified.

I would like to assume though, the block is still a 2.7 un modified.

Guessing it doesn't run, or does it? I can see someone throwing anything laying around on top of it.

Doesn’t matter if the price is right.

Well embarrassingly, it is infact a 3.2. The owner finally sent a photo across, and both himself and the state registration wrote down 636, when infact it says 63G.......

That makes more sense. I can't imagine the difficult engineering of putting a 3.2 injection system on a 2.7.

So you have a 3.2 liter DME controlled engine. A great option.

So...how much work to put it back to original?

Well that's good news for you. 3.2 is a better and more powerful engine.

959 replica, let's see it.

Everything engine wise is better than the 2.7 engine system. Unless you are going for a perfect show car, keep the 3.2.
