Hi-Torque Starter Installation Notes/Questions
 

I'm installing the hi-torque starter acquired from our host on my '83SC with a 915.

The barrel nut doesn't properly engage at the base of the starter, and a washer doesn't fit either. The lip around the mounting hole is too close to the stud. Looks like I will have to mill out a bit of the base - anyone else encounter this? Is taking a Dremel to the starter base the preferred option here?

Also wondering if others have clocked the starter base so that there's more clearance for the heat exchanger tube - it's super tight.

I clocked 85 so terminals are almost straight up, battery cable just fits. I had to get a new heater hose The old one may have been trimmed at some point and didnt reach by 1/2”.

Is taking a Dremel to the starter base the preferred option here?

Also check the depth of the nose gear as compared to the old starter, they need to be exact
too many depths are incorrect in my experience , new ones are too deep

On mine I was able to use washers since it does not have the "cut down" you have. Not sure what the purpose of cutting that down was by the manufacturer. I also had to add a short battery cable extension since no matter how it was rotated, the original cable was just a bit too short. I don't recall any issues with the heater hose, however I did replace mine since they were pretty ratty.

Well, Pelican sold it, and marked it as “Yes, it fits,” so not sure why the depth would be an issue. How would one check for proper depth of the nose gear?
