Selecting the right Glasurit Line

Repainting the 74 911 in Gulf Blue (original color). Windows, seals, trim, etc all removed already.

Paint code is 328-J8.
I have contacted BASF who owns Glasurit and they have sent me formulations for the three lines of Glasurit paint.

Line 22, Line 55, and Line 90.
Can anyone with Glasurit experience comment on which lines they used? It's my understanding Line 22 is single stage, but I'm no expert when it comes to painting.

Thanks in advance,
Armin

Armin. Not an expert by any means but I think Line 22 is the original. Do a search here and at the Early 911S BBS.

22 Line is single stage

55 line is solvent basecoat

90 Line is waterborne basecoat

Porsche used single stage for solid colours into the late 80's. Metallics switched to basecoat / clear coat in the late 70's / early 80's

Which Glasurit you use might depend on your state / location. 22 line and 55 line are not legal to buy or use in some air quality regions as they are solvent-borne products

Thanks for the info. I'm in Texas and will check. We are usually pretty "loosey goosey" when it comes to regulations... Ha

Inquire also into the Paint/Bodywork forum - they've got a few experienced folks over there...

on my green car i was headed for the 22 line and ended up with 90 line.

i was less concerned ultimately with correctness as i was with paint i could keep up on a car i drive a lot. as i understand, the 2 stage is easier to work with if you have to work with it after the fact when touch up is necessary. single stage is tough to get in CA, only certain counties are still allowed use it.

paint is 1.5 years old with 10K miles and i'm very happy with it...

22 line for me. Easy to do. I did mine in the garage. Very happy. Looks proper old school.

With that light of a solid color and the risk of contamination throughout the clearcoat process as in a spec of pigmented dust or anything I would recommend 22-line

Correct...

Forget about 90 line unless you/your painter are set-up to use waterborne. As for 22 Line.. its nice if that's the finish you want. However, I prefer the 55 line as nothing pops like base-coat/clear coat especially on the older colors. You can build the clear and work the cut for a shine that you will not match with single stage.

Hey, just my preference and I love it on Gulf Blue!

You will like the finish. It won't look like a new Kia

Well it was pay 600 for a good gun. 3 or 4 thousand for paint and consumables or 15 to 20k for a colour change paint job. Even at that price its just a paint job. Not a show finish and probably not much better than mine.

Yeah, but you get to admire it every day and say I did that. That alone is worth more than 15 or 20k in itself.

Hoping to repaint my 89 Targa with Paint Code 80k 92 Guards Red, Indiscrot G1. What is the paint to use? two stages? Is Glasurit best option? or Dupont or House of colors?

The factory painted single stage Guards Red with a white base coat then Red. Some of the other brighter colors I think used the same process.

Another fun fact is the red uses a lot more pigment and is more expensive than white...
