Early Cooling Tin on a Later Engine?

I have a set of tin that just doesn't seem long enough to fit between the cylinders and give enough purchase to capture the springs. Is there any way to tell early from late tin? Was the tin different for every size engine?

Anybody have some 3.0 tin they want to sell or trade for some earlier tin that has had the Gill Paszek cooling tin modification done to it?
