Help to identify oil leaks

Hi all,

I`m new to 911 and picked up a 1980 Targa last year. I have now removed the CIS to have it rebuild/resealed and also to attend the TOD and oil cooler leaks. When I look at the tope of my engine, I see oil traces that look to be not related to the TOD. I have circuled in yellow the areas I`m refererring to. Could someone help me to understand the source of these leaks? Could this be related to loose head bolts? Could it be leaking oil from the bolts holding the casing together?

Thanks in advance!

What does the shroud look like, oil can get in from the shroud down to the engine in some of your places. The triangle breather hose can spray some oil too. Don't think it's case bolts, I've never had a loose head stud so I can't say what that might look like. What is the milelage?

Dose not appear to be supper wet oil. Checking for broken head studs (exhaust, intakes are steel and don't break) is a good idea.

Hi Mike,

Many thanks for the response. The car has 345.000 km but I believe the engine has already been rebuilt once. At least I can see blue beads in the case and cylinder joints. Please see below a picture of the shroud and one from the oil cooler cover.
Altough the image of the engine was taken after I had cleaned it up a bit, you are right, not a lot of wet oil. But still there was a lot of dripping. Even with the car sitting in the garage for 4 months without running.

If you are getting dripping after sitting for 4 months, it ain't coming from the top of the engine.

Over time, the oil in the tank slowly drains back into the case, raising the oil level in the case to above the lower edges of the cylinder. You will have to do some careful investigation to find where the leaks are. If the engine was rebuilt at some point in the past, the lower rows of Dilavar head studs should have been replaced with steel studs. Check to be sure. Dilavar studs eventually break.

looks like spills on the shroud explain a lot of the oil on top of the engine, would not worry about case bolts.

Do your self a favor and drop your engine. That way you can properly clean it up, check head bolts, adjust valves, and reinstall the csi, and wiring

Hi all,

Many thanks for the answers to my post. It was helpful to rule out some thoughts I had and the investigation goes on!
