Help!!! Volkswagen a/c on my 72T

How do I remove the A/C unit which is inside the smuggler's box? Has anyone done this?

From what I saw, they must have cut an area in the passenger footwell, stuffed the unit thru the opening, stuffed the radiator 'thingy' afterwards, then reduced the opening in the footwell by welding a frame-like metal.

Help!

Are you sure it wasn't lowered into the the smuggler's box from the top opening inside the front trunk? In the early cars, it is sometimes a tight fit and the under dash ducting has to be removed or loosened to allow the nozzle from the blower to be released so the evaporator/blower unit can be lifted out.

Jim,

The disconnection of ducting/plumbing is scheduled for tonight. I have started to remove some of the bracing. This is actually my first pisser project. Why?.......... After 5 years, I had to find my non-metric sockets. Those nuts/bolts are not metric! Grrrrrr!

I'll keep u posted.

A good number of the early 911 A/C aftermarket or dealer installed kits were made here in the US The A/C hose fittings and most other fasteners are US sizes. Those used on the compressor brackets were usually metric though since they mounted to the engine.

Well, I managed to pull the sucker out. As we all suspected, I disconnected the fittings, removed the right wheel, pulled plumbing, and with a little bit of effort enlarging the smuggler's box, I was able to remove the unit. Crap, and I thought that would weight as heavy as the compressor on my 83 sc.

The smuggler's box was big and dirty; I found coils, sockets, hex keys, plugs, almost everything you can think of......except the body of Jimmy Hoffa.

The minus of removing the unit is that now, I may want to use the area for installing my future subwoofer(s)......BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
