North East PA - Clutch help needed

I've recently acquired an 84 911. Unfortunately it does need a new clutch.
I've flirted with the idea of just sending it to the local guy. However, I do love working on old cars and desire to get to know my ride a bit better.

I am a very accomplished home mechanic, yet feel a bit overwhelmed with needing to do such a substantial first job on my p-car.

I am hoping for two things:

First someone willing to help show me the ropes - I have Wayne's book and all tools needed.

Second - as I live in a 200 year old house in Clarks Summit without a garage - can I invite myself to your place?

I know that this is all a lot to ask. In return I can offer this:

I love to cook and would be more than happy to provide for you and your family an unforgettable steak or seafood dinner of your choice with matched wine or beer of course. I have access to some of the finest grass fed beef in the area.

Additionally, I would certainly provide any and all needed refreshments during the task.

Sound like fun to anyone?

Clarks Summit. It's the last stop on the Northeast Extension, and a long long way from Erie.

I'm a good bit closer, but still too far away.

Welcome to the Forum Da Vinci.

I grew up in Dallas(PA), but now live in the Philly burbs. Are you a PCA member? I am sure that there are folks in the Pocono Region that could help you out.

Congrats on the car. If you want to save some bucks, and do some of the gruntwork, drop the engine&trans, then you can bring it to the porsche mechanic.

I suggest getting Wayne's 101 project book, and bring use a mechanic that specializes in 911s, not any mechanic.

There is a porsche dismantler in your near you, I bought a 3.6 from a few years back, don't remember the name, but he might know some local wrenches.

Closest mechanic I know to your area is Peter Dawe, near Stroudsburg.

I grew up in Kingston. Lots of friends in the Back Mountain. Any idea if Alan Dukes is still around in Dallas to help the original poster out?

I bought my car from Rick Bolus - the dismantler that was mentioned and one of the most honest straight forward guys around.

I live in Clarks Summit.

As a recent new owner I am not part of the local chapter -

Anyone in the area?

My father-in-law lives in Downingtown, PA - I am more than welcome to use his garage(s) at any time. Anyone around that neck of the woods?

Dan,

If you could drive the car to Downingtown, why not drive down to Norristown and use my lift. I had a fellow member called me one day that he broke his clutch cable and was stranded several miles away from his home. He was looking for a shop to bring it on a weekend. I offered my place since I had a spare clutch cable sitting in the garage. AAA dropped the car at my place and he was out driving back home after 3 hours.

Bring a replacement cable with you and I'll be more than happy to assist you. PM me for details and I'll invite the other fellows to join the party.

Tony

You guys are great - I sure feel welcome here.

The car is still very drivable. It is just starting to slip when I accelerate quickly around 3000 RPM in third-fifth. The rpms will jump about 500-700 then go straight back down as the clutch starts to stick.

Tony - thanks for your generosity - PM is sent.

I grew up in Conshohoken and went to PWHS. It will be nice to get back to the area again!!

Dan,

You might consider checking your clutch disc too. The sudden increase in engine RPM and no change in car's velocity (in gear) seems to be a slipping clutch disc or pressure plate problem. I will be available from May 10 to 21. However, I will be out of the country from May 22 to June 6. And will be available again for a month.

Looking forward to meet another 911 enthusiast.

Tony

Ooooops.........!

Dan,

I re-read your post and somehow, it registered in my mind something different that was obvious. Somehow, I thought it was about clutch cable replacement. Anyway, my offer still stands.......we need an engine drop!!!! We need more than 4 hours to do this project and allocate a full day for completion.

Barring any unforeseen problem/s, this will be an easy day's work for us. Contact me on Monday afternoon or evening. I'm out in the golf course every morning (Monday to Friday) enjoying my retirement years. Tinkering cars is one of the few things that could take me away from hacking golf balls. Looking forward to meet you.

Tony

clutch

First of all dropping the engine and trans takes no time or talent. Mostly a floor jack and a set of wrenches. Also if you come down to phila and you find that your flywheel is bad and the engine and trans are out, then you are up a creek? I live in Thorndale, right next to Downingtown.

We did the engine drop and replaced the clutch disc. There was a minor problem with the pressure he brought but I had a spare one. We switched it and completed the installation. He drove home and never saw the fellow again! Several months went by without hearing a word from him until one day a mail arrived with a $200 gift certificate to a very nice steak house in King of Prussia. I was thinking this was too much ($200).

I took my wife with me and ordered steaks, with salad for her and soup for me. No wine, no drinks (just cold water), no desert and the bill including tips was almost $200! Had we ordered a complete dinner with salad and soup plus desert and coffee, I can’t imagine the total bill would be. That was the last time I’ve been near that steak house.

The steak was good, the service was elegant, but this was not my cup of tea. Thanks for the dinner.

Tony
