Pics of Steel Wheels on a Widebody?

I was wondering if anybody has put widened steel wheels on a widebody car and has pics? I’m thinking of having these alum wheels made in the proper offset in 17” (9&11) painted in black for our 930. I’ve never seen the old style steel wheels on a G model car. Any out there?

I’d like to see someone else who’s been the guinea pig before I spend the dough. Heck, even if someone was good with photoshop that’d be the least bit helpful.

Wicked if one likes the look of 1990's Ford E350 wheels on their vintage 911!

Great idea!!! I'd like to see that too. Who makes those "aluminum steelies"?

Made by Coddington Wheels (Boyd’s son Chris) I have a set on our replica 904. Very well done. I
“think” they’d look cool in the proper size and Chris told me it’s no problem to make.

Not a widebody, but they look great to me.

Rotiform makes a forged, three-piece version as well.

Again, not a widebody but a pretty bad-ass look...

Widened steelies sound super heavy putting weight were you don’t want it, but if it’s all about ‘the look’ over function, then have at it.

Old tech or not, widened steelies are the coolest thing ever!

Want new tech? HRE is 3d printing wheels from titanium powder now.

Those widened steel wheelies look pretty cool on that Beck 904 on the other thread. Curious to see how those would look on a 930. Hard to imagine beating the classic looks of Fuchs but I'm keeping an open mind...

Interesting, but I would be worried about high-cycle fatigue. We print components out of titanium, but they are only used in low-stress situations where cyclic loading isn't an issue.

We are hoping to do some fatigue testing soon, though.

I pulled a pic of the 930 from your profile and made an amateur attempt at photoshopping the wheels in. I thing they would look really cool but I'm not so sure about the 17" diameter. I've been watching Barrett Jackson all week and the one thing that sticks out on a lot of the "resto mod" cars for sale nowadays is the large diameter wheels / low profile tires on older cars. It has to be done right or it makes the car look like it's in two different generations. It's not necessarily just the larger wheel diameter, but something about the low profile tires on an older vehicle just confuses the period correct look.

THANK YOU supersignman, not only did you photoshop on a 930, but OUR 930! You rock!!

So, I’m thinking maybe 16” would be better to achieve the look (with a taller sidewall) vs the 17”. How does the consensus weigh in on the look?

I have 17’s on it now with Speedlines and it looks good.

I’m not “as concerned” with the weight as the Coddington’s are alum and not steel. “Steelies” is just the name we are all used to.

Thanks again! I’ll keep y’all posted.

Here are the 16" Campagnolo replica wheels I have on my 86 Carrera. I painted them a dark grey metallic and have 255/50's on the rear with 225/50's on the front. I like the little bit of rake the rear tires put in the car and the bigger sidewalls give it more of a period correct look. Everybody has their own taste though. I never get tired of looking at all the ways people modify their 911's. They're the ultimate automotive artistic canvas!
