Input Shaft Seal Replacement-915 trans
Well, the 3.2 is all but finished. I noticed the clutch disc on the removed and sold 2.7 was wet with trans fluid. It appears the input shaft seal on the 72' 915 trans needs replacing. I looked in the Haynes manual and it says remove two hex nuts to remove the sleeve over the splined input shaft to reach the input shaft seal. As the photo below will show, I have no hex nuts to remove to get the sleeve off...Anyone done this? The Porsche technical manual says the trans has to be partially dismantled...I hope not.
Any help will be appreciated. Also, I managed to sort out the 14 pin wiring converting the 84' harness to the 72' male end on the body. Bottom photo shows the finished harness. More info is on the website and I have also included a link to a PDF file I made which simplifies the identification of the pins if anyone is interested. This diagram assumes use of an MSD ignition and a magnetic triggered (930) distributor. The good news is you probably have a 7:31 R&P, the bad news is that you can not get to the seal from the outside on '72 (and '73 I think) 915s. The seal has to be replaced from the inside. Some say there is a trick by accessing it from one of the side plates . . . dam if I could figure that out. Sorry to say, but it's coming apart. Might as well do the shift shaft seal as well. |

The 72 915 case has to be split to replace input shaft seal, mine was the same way when yanked out of car. Only year of 915 like that, also r&p has reputation as being weak. Phil |

Yep, your 915 will need to be opened up to fix that seal. Mine is bad as well, but I'm letting it leak until the tranny really needs a rebuild. It only leaks when driving it...when as rest, the tranny fluid settles to below the level of the seal (or so I've been told).

A miserable 18 month experiment by Porsche. I just replaced this seal on our 73E (production - 1/73) and it required splitting the case. While they were in there the sychros got replaced. My project suddenly got $1,250 more expensive. :(
