Are my turn signals and side marker reversed?

ok so im genuinely confused because my car has the turn signals on the very right/very left side, and the front lights are the parking lights aka markers.

my car is similar to this

but I noticed other cars have them reversed.

which is the correct configuration? and why the PO reversed them, was it a thing?

Im going to remove the bumper for other reasons this weekend so maybe while I'm there ei can set them right once and for all...

... but which is the correct setup??

On my '85 and my '76, the sidelights do not signal turns.
They were mandated by NHTSA to be marker lights only.

The proper configuration is with the turn signal lights forward and side markers behind turn signals.

On my '83 SC, they were also reversed but I believe that occurred when the bumper was re-painted back in the late 1980's and the body shop just reinstalled them in reverse order.

If you do take the bumper off, I would recommend to go euro and remove the side markers altogether and replace them with the Front Bumper Impact Strips.

FWIW, the lights are not reversible.
The front turn signals will not mount to the side marker studs; two separate and different configurations.

I have to respectfully disagree with you, at least with a 1983 911SC. I was able to swap my turn signal housing, from the side location to the front--they mounted and fit perfectly.

Just to show evidence. Here two photos (the day the original owner bought it) and when I removed the bumper to swap... Clearly see it was reversed at some point after left factory.

Had front bumper off my 81 two weeks ago. The side markers and directionals are indeed reversible for that model year.

so why all these different setup? is it like a common mod/preference (similar to the wiper reversal)?

Matthew_VA 05-24-2024 03:54 AM

Like I said, may just be a mix up when body shop reinstalled the bumper after being painted. Don't believe it was a common mod or preference since you want the turn sign signal facing forward (not on the side) for most visibility for on coming traffic.

Sorry, that looks hideous - no self-respecting shop would send a car out like that.
Note that there is no inner screw on the inner fixture. ????
I would love to see how others addressed that......

confused by your post... Send a car out like how--with the light housing swapped? I agree that's why I put them back the original way...

If the screw isn't there it's because I removed it. again, the repaint of bumper was done decades ago.

but hideous??? looks a bit odd but I can think of scores of other things that look worse.
