Short Shift ?
I purchased my first Porsche (76 911 S targa) about 2 months ago and since then have been sorting out some problems, making tweeks and upgrades, etc. This board has been a fantastic resource! So thank you all!
My question today is this: How do I know if I have a short shift kit? I know this sounds stupid..."If there is a shorter throw you have the short shift kit." But, I have no basis for comparison. The throw seems long, but my daily driver is an Audi TT with a really short throw (compared to the 911). Previous onwers have made many uprgrades and I'm trying to figure out if they made this one. Thanks, Jon |

If you have to lean foward to shift then you probably have a short shifter. Aftermarket shifters are "usually" branded under the cover ie. Weltmeister. Check the archives to recognize the factory ones. I think they have special serial #'s, but don't qoute me on it.

JP911,
I also have a TT (although it was abducted by the wife) and the throw is indedd very short, so it is not a good comparison. My car came without a short shifter. I did not know if it had one or not, but the throw was so long that I "felt" it did not have one. Mind I have mainly driven stick shift cars all my life (we Europeans usually do not drive automatics) and I had a good basis for comparing the "feeling". If it helps you, when I shifted into 2nd the knob touched the side of the seat. Now after installing the short shifter it does not come that close. Hope this helps. |
