Question SC Rear Axle Installation?

I have done a few of these over the last couple decades as well as some on a bug. The procedure seems to be the same on both. I ordered a new axel, cleaned everything up, put on new gaskets, greased everything just like I have done in the past but here is the twist. This time when I tighten down (a little more than hand tight) the bolts that attached the axle to the wheel it locks up, binds.

I thought there is something defective with this axle because the one I pulled off just had a torn boot, no other issues. I got the new one in, same procedure and bam.. locks up when I tighten those outter bolts.

Any suggestions on what is going on?

What is it that's binding or locking up, and how?

Are you using new axle bolts? Did you compare the width of the new outer CV to the old one?

It sounds like the bolts are too long, and they protrude into the trailer arm and hit it.

That was my thought as well driving into work this morning. I am using the new ones, both times. I will look to see if they are a tad longer. I mean I'm 1mm away from the torque spec so if there is just that difference I assume/hope that is the issue. I will take a look at that when I get home.

Everything works perfectly until I tighten things down slightly on the wheel side. I think the bolt length might be the issue.

My thought as well. Compare the flange width and the bolt lengths old v. new.

What stops working perfectly fine? Wheel won't turn? Will the wheel turn with the axle when the bolts are only in there finger tight, then everything stops turning when you tighten them?

Yes.. the wheel won't turn without force.. has to be the bolts! It will be funny if that is the case.

Here is a thread on the bolt size differences. Everything is working once I used the shorter bolts on the wheel side.
