Rennline rear deck lid strut question
Hi guys,
I feel really stupid but I have a problem I somehow can’t seem to figure out myself. I recently bought a Rennline fully mechanical rear deck lid strut from our host. When I tried to install it, I noticed that even when fully retracted, the deck lid hinge would not return to its normal (deck lid closed) position. Also with the strut extended and with the hinge fully in the upright position, it would not lock at all. Somehow it seems that there is just not enough room for the strut to lock and not enough room for it to fully lower the hinge. The original gas strut also seems to be too long to install. The hinge and the strut mounting point have not been tampered with, I must be doing something wrong... With Kind regards D@vid

I'm good with tools.

D@vid.....
I have installed several of these mechanical Rennline struts. I ran into a similar issue with one of the struts. I was fighting it in the open and close positions. I was not having an issue with the gas strut. If this is simply an issue with the mechanical strut I would return it. If your having an issue with the gas strut you may have the wrong part installed. There are hundreds of different sizes of gas struts. It's either the wrong gas strut or you have a hinge issue.

David, have you contracted Rennline about this? They are usually very helpful. I have the mechanical strut from them on my 911, installed with no problems and works great. The only item I can point out as being a bit odd was that in the fully open position, the decklid rests a little lower than it did before so I've bumped my head into it a couple times. Just need to get used to it I guess.
None of this helps you any I'm afraid, but anyway mine installed well and works as it should on a 1981 SC.

You can try contacting Rennline through this site. They use 'Rennline' as their site user name, which is handy.

Thanks for all your replies guys, It's a mystery. I will indeed contact Rennline and double (tripple) check the original gas strut fit.
I am also contemplating fabricating a small bracket that will allow me to create a bit more room for the strut. I would really like to keep the rennline strut. Again, thanks for your input. Kind regards, David ![]()

Hi guys,
When I took a hard look at the photo's I took before repairs I discovered why the strut would not fit. See if you can spot the problem ![]() ![]()
