There's a left strap and right strap.... kind of odd, but clearly shown in the above pic.

One strap is longer to go around the heat exchanger pipe up to the heat fan, the other goes around the mount on the engine.

If you deleted heat you will need shorter straps.

Pelican sells the left and right straps, maybe you bought two of the shorter straps without knowing this.

I don't see any long or short for sale here. they are all the same code. either way I don't have the heating pipe going through. myine is a 82 SC stock.

Anyways, I ordered longer bolts. it seems the common solution.

Something else to look out for: If your new muffler has the 3.2 heater crossover pipe cutout in it (the indents in the below pic), it may require a different hanger and straps than the original muffler. You can also expect the passenger/right side to sit higher than the left.

are you referring to this kind of problem?

for the straps, a longer bolt will suffice.

but now I'm curious about the bracket/hanger, why did you mention that?

(I believe) the 3.0 mufflers have their intake hole/port/doohickey about 3-4 inches lower than the 3.2 mufflers. The 3.0 hanger tries to position the 3.2 muffler too high. It won't connect to the 3.0 cat (or, in my case, test pipe). Here's the 3.0 hanger and 3.2 muffler:

If you use the 3.0 hanger and longer straps, you still need another 6-8 inches of strap in order for it to sit proper:

However, if you use the 3.2 hanger, which positions the strap supports lower, everything bolts up proper-like. This muffler was ordered from Pelican Parts, and is said to fit my 3.0 SC. Manufacturer says the same thing. When actually attached, though? Not even close. Basically, if you match your muffler, hanger, and straps, it'll all work out.

(Also worth noting is that this is for a 1-in 1-out muffler. YMMV with the dual-input mufflers, such as used with SSIs.)

I still have the cat, and it seems pretty high, close to the engine than your pipe...

I'll take some measurements later, just in case

Nope, not sure at all. It's possible that the jig they used to build the pipe was warped, but I don't believe it was. With the 3.2 hanger and straps, everything bolted up and fit perfectly. In the quoted pic, the muffler is kinda-sorta in the correct place. If I recall correctly, it was tilted because it's slightly rear-heavy, and was rested on top of the test pipe. When actually "lined up", it sat in front of the flange on the test pipe, but not in such a way that any of the three bolts could be inserted - The upper metal on the test pipe touched the lower metal on the muffler. Sorry, really hard to explain.

Interesting, Just installed a test pipe along with the new muffler and have the same issue with the right side a little higher. I did not use the long strap that goes around the hot air tube, just used the bracket. It did appear the test pipe was causing the issue.

did you test the muffler with the old pipe / cat pipe (mine has the catalytic one)

I do know for sure the PET book recommended straps are too short and so I got 100mm bolts... but it feels too strange that you also need a new bracket

I wonder if the jig they use to make the test pipe has the exhaust flange clocked a few degrees off in the counterclockwise direction? That'd put the right side slightly higher than the left.

Also, @FlatOutFly - Are you using the 3.0 hanger and straps, or the 3.2?

francesconyc 06-13-2024 06:59 AM

I wonder if any of you guys took pictures of the old muffler compared to the new one.
Also the old catalytic pre-muffler vs the test pipe

They all look the same but i guess a degree or two can cause big difference as you guys reported

Im attempting to do the job Saturday… will see if it fits
