New engine block cleaner

My block is an '83, 300 thousand + miles of burned in junk inside and out, one hour of using this stuff. I did the engine cleaner first, it was from NAPA, did very little, was a disappointment on how weak this stuff is now. So I tried this from Dawn Professional Products I found on Amazon, amazing.
I did 2 coats, half hour each, on a dry surface and kept it wet with more and a soft brush moving it around and forced air dry between coats.
I have NEVER cleaned a block this bad without echoing the surface this fast, it did not foam up like Sodium Hydroxide does and turn the surface dark and etch the bearing surfaces.
I will still have to clean off the Loctite 574 but that is a small price to pay to not spend DAYS cleaning engine parts.
Old Fart out, flame on Gents..

nice

there is a steel tube in the case that can rust if you dont get all the water out. some lps1 on it fore long storage. i would put that case in a 150 degree oven to dry it out.

Long term storage? What's that? This thing goes back together tomorrow. I only stopped today because I'm old and it's time for a Liga Prevera cigar.

I found it on Amazon while I was looking for Super Clean which works but is NaOH and etches aluminum so you must be quick.

Yes, I did have to scrape the corners.. I use a bamboo chopstick, my point is that once I broke through the crud and this stuff got underneath it worked fast lifting and liquifying the old oil. This sure beats a toothbrush and a can of Brakleen.
I got a lot of tools for cleaning parts up to bead blasters and ultrasonics but they work from the top surface of crud inward and once I gave this stuff some bite to get underneath it was quick. It does not smell much and it did not tear up my hands or arms when I got splashed. It sprays on thick and says do not dilute so dumping it in the ultrasonic might not work. I took the picture because of how shiny the inside of the block came out, the outside still looks rough after 40 years so it will not shine up aluminum but it is not bad if the surface is good to begin with. I would not let it dry on the surface ether, could be a ***** to get off and as wheel cleaner??? who knows. I just found it and will see what problems and attributes crop up.

Do you think this would be safe to use to clean up well arches and undercarriage of the car? If it can degrease an engine...

For wheel wells and undercarriage ZEP citrus degreaser (available at Local hardware strores) works very well. You can see some results at link below on a car I cleaned up.

Look at the picture I posted. What impressed me was the shine on the inside on the engine, it did not etch the shiny aluminum. What I would try is take the wheel off and use it on the back side filth and see how it works. As for the rest of the car it will work fine, it did not tear up my hands so it is not caustic to skin.

So last night I made biscuits and used an old aluminum pan that was permanently stained with burned in junk after 20 years...Pizza, varies BBQ adventures, a general purpose junk pan. I tried the Power Desolver on it and it did ok not great or as good as an engine cleaner, but OK, took 10 years of crap off but could use another shot of PD.

Thanks for the tip - I ordered some to try, both on cars and on some of my kitchenware.

I used some on an aluminum pan last night that has 25 years of baked on grease. Amazingly with one soaking it cleaned 75% of the grease off with out much scrubbing. Now I am going to try it on the bottom of a dirty 914 motor. I will see how it goes.
Thanks for the tip.

Hi Old H2S,
Sending you a big THANK YOU for posting this!!

Bought what I believe is essentially the same product (Dawn Professional - Degreaser) and started using it earlier today and was very pleased with the results!

Started with the lower engine compartment…. areas under the rubber engine seal/tins and above
the oil tank etc….. and the oil residue literally began dripping off the areas I sprayed. Pleasant smell as well.

Will buy a gallon or two… and go to town!!

Thanks,
JT

It may not be NaOH, but the pH is 13, so don't get it on your skin and definitely not in your eyes.
