Hood Badge Gasket
I recently bought a new hood badge for my early 911. The gasket on the old one, which came with the car when I bought it, was only fitted about 3/4 around the edge. I tried to fix it but the screws broke off because they had been epoxyed on by the PO. So I bought a new one thinking no big deal only $35. The problem is now I can't seem to get the gasket to fit all the way around the edge of the badge either. I've tried soaking it in hot water, pulling it and stretching it, lubbing it etc. But it just seems like the gasket it too small. Is there some special trick to this simple procedure or do I really have a defective part? What a pain.
Any comments would be a great help for something so silly. Thanks Brian |

It will fit, but it takes some work. Try heating it with a hair dryer.

work it around the badge using all your fingers until the lip can be held in place. start the pins in the hood holes and gently let your fingers slip out from under it as you hold it firmly down to attach the clips. repeat as necessary.

I used a hair dryer to heat mine. You only have a few seconds to work before it stiffens up again.

It will also spread a little when you tighten it down. Just take your time, heat it a little, stretch it a little, etc.
I just did this on Monday night, too embarrassed to post that I could not get it on correctly......but finally got it.

You definately have to heat it up and it cools quickly so you don't have much time. You also need a thin blunt tool (I found a dental tool and a cuticle stick work well) to pry out the gasket edge under the badge. Work quickly and sofly. It's a pain in the A$$ but don't get too annoyed if you have to start over a couple times. Small imperfections in the edge (from the prying) will virtually disappear once the gasket is in place and has sat in the sun a few times.

I used a bit of trim adhesive under the gasket, and then used a binder clip to clamp it to the badge. I then worked my way around the badge, repeating this process, until the gasket was evenly stretched around the badge. I let it set up for a few hours, then I was able to mount it to the hood with no troubles whatsoever.

excellent idea. that's a procedure that needs to be in the tech articles with a few pictures.
