3.6 diagnostics help needed

3.6 guys,

When I read out the fault memory of the DME with the check engine light I get a fault code 1-1-3-4 which is the hall sensor. Does anybody know what the implications of a bad hall sensor would be?

FYI: The hall sensor is the little pickup on the dual dizzy. The 964 workshop manual does not say a lot about its function. I don't know what it is needed for in the grand scheme of DME engine management.

Anyone?

Thanks,
Ingo

Sorry I can't help Ingo, but it sounds like you hooked up a diagnostic port to your DME. Is it difficult?

Moses, on the 964 (maybe others?) you can read the stored fault codes by going through a sequence and counting the flahes on the ! light. It flashes a series of on/off bursts and after a few tries you can interperet it fairly easy. I don't remeber the initiation procedure but it is in the service manuals.

You can use a fault code reader or count the flashes....GMC does the same thing....:p

Hey Ingo...you gonna get up at 7am and go to Santa Maria with Dan and I on Sunday? Don't look like it if'n yer posting at 1;30 am.....

So, anyone having some ideas??

Ingo, I may be wrong here but it was my understanding the distributor has no function other than the distribution of sparks.

The sensor is at the the rear of the engine

Bill,

when you look at a 3.6 dual distributor you'll see a three-pin connector from the DME wiring harness on the main body. It comes off the same branch as the connector for the belt minder.

According to the factory workshop manual it's a hall sensor "listening' to a rotating disk inside the distributor. The factory manual only says you want to replace the hall sensor if there is a fault. I don't understand what the DME would need that signal for. Maybe a consistency check to make sure the dizzy rides on the correct tooth. Also where do I look for a replacement part. PET does not list anything. So I am kind of lost as to what to do now.

I am also not sure whether this fault gets deleted when I disconnect the DME from B+. In other words I don't know whether this thing is important, where to get it, and what it does.

Someone must know what it's for, right. DME guys chime in here please.
