Front Windshield Sun Band at Top for 81SC US Coupe?
I've got a small chip in my windshield that my insurance company will replace. I'm having my local Porsche dealer replace it for me. My chipped windshield (Sigla) has a light tint with no darker band on the top. It is not original though - I'm on my 3rd windshield, and I cannot recall if the original windshield had a darker band on top or not. All my other original glass is tinted Sekurit. My dealer says the original has a dark band on top for US 911SCs and that the Porsche part numbers for my model year indicate a tinted with sun band. I'd like whatever came with the car originally on my 1981 US 911SC Coupe. I saw in a thread here that someone had a original windshield on his 911SC that had no dark band on top so I'm confused. For anyone with an original early 1980s 911SC US Coupe chime in and tell me if you have a dark sun band or not? Thanks.

Based on PET, assuming you have a car built for the North American market, you should have a windshield with green tine across the top.

Like many parts on these cars, sometimes there can be more than one correct answer. I have an 81SC that I purchased new and still has the original glass. It is a US model with AC.
The windshield does not have a darker tint band at the top. It is a Sigla and bears the following markings: As15 SGG D429 DOT 25M 33791 DGM 33791VSC WH PLC |

It is however a targa, not a coupe.

Thanks for the responses. Apparently, Sekurit is no longer made and according to the parts manager Porsche has superseded the parts numbers listed in the PET to a top tinted windshield with a antenna in the windshield, heated for my 81SC. I think these were probably for a late 80's Carrera. I called the dealer and they agreed, it made no sense to have a windshield with an antenna in it, so they ordered me a new old stock Sigla, tinted without the top band. They said it does not have the Porsche parts logo (triangular with PD in it), but I'd rather have that than a window with an antenna in it. I've asked some friends who have 80's 911 and it's a mixed bag. One had the tint band (replacement Pilkington), the other didn't.

Just to follow up on this - my insurance company covered the complete cost for a replacement windshield, seal, and trim pieces. I ended up with a new Sigla windshield (tinted, with no band at top). They actually had to install it twice as my original cracked dash prevented the windshield from seating fully in the bottom corners. They added a few screws to push down the dash and got the windshield installed correctly. I thought at the same time I'd have them replace my rear windshield seal also as mine was dried out and cracking. I didn't realize how much installers charge for the REAR window (with heater wire) installation. The rear was twice as much as the front windshield, and the seal installation looks a little wrinkled on the inside. I'm told it's because of the heater wire. My hats off to those of you brave enough to tackle installing your front or rear windshields.
