Opinions on this 964 Oil Line Repair by PO

Car is an 89 C4. I have been replacing oil hoses from the oil tank back due to leaks and decided to open up the front fender well to check on those lines and found this:

I was a bit taken back by the use of hose clamps rather installing proper ends. Doesn't appear to be leaking. Thoughts on the need to do something different? I know the right answer would be to redo the set up. I guess what I'm really looking for are thoughts on whether the hose clamp approach can be reasonably expected to remain leak free for the next 5-7 years. Thanks for thoughts.

A quality hose clamp on a barbed fitting is actually very secure. It is not a very elegant solution but will likely be fine. It would be hard for me to tolerate it, but that is based on how it looks, not how it performs.

While I was told it’s not ideal I’ve had that same set up on my car for five years. No leaks.

I have a F159 trans cooler line failure (a +$250 replacement part) with the same screw band clamp setup, probably 3-4 yrs. no drips.

Sure, garden variety hose clamps appear awkward but an Oetiker clamp is definitely better looking, but not sure if small ones can be opened to use in a repair/replace situation without removing hose. So you could explore that route.

Roadkill Pro Tip: Paint shiny hose clamps (or any show parts) black.

Try taking it off. I'll bet that you end up cussing at it.

Not how I would choose to make the end of an oil line, but it will work if you keep those clamps snug.

Thanks for the thoughts and input. I will probably delay that replacement for now. Certainly not visually appealing but at least hidden in the fender well. Taking care of the lines from the tank back has been taxing enough for now.

If those are pressure oil lines, personally I wouldnt be happy with hose clamps. Might be fine though.
Different story if it’s a feed line from tank to motor, that’s under suction.

Good point on pressure vs. suction.

If there are no leaks, "Don't Fix what Ain't Broke".....just keep an eye on it.

Those lines are on the scavenge side of the system moving oil from engine thru the oil cooler and back to the tank thru the filter. There is a external thermostat so these only flow oil when oil is hot and thin. Unless there is a problem there should be very little pressure. The factory crimp is probably better but apparently they leak as several including myself have a similar repair.

Scavenge side of the system isn’t necessarily low pressure just because it isn’t the “pressure” side of the system. Especially with cold oil and on startup after sitting a while, and without any pressure relief system on the scavenge side. People who have measured it got 100+psi.

Still might be fine though
