Orientation of engine fan strap

My engine was rebuilt in 2007. I’ve noticed (see picture) that the fan strap is bolted together on top, which does not look correct to me. What is the proper position of the connecting bolt (top, bottom, etc)? If i have to rotate it, can i just loosen it enough to turn it, or will I mess something up (is there tension from the belt, etc)?http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1719091586.jpg

Fixed nut is generally on the left side making it easier to access the hex with a wrench. Personally, I wouldn't mess with it. The tips of your fan blades sure seem to be chewed up more than normal.

I had the fan powder coated. That is the powder coating that is chewed up. In retrospect, probably not a great idea. So if i removed the coil, I would not be able to loosen and rotate the strap? Im trying to put reproduction stickers back on.

Yes, head on the right side.

Bolt should be this.

No big deal, replace it if you want to, I don't think there's any precision measurement needed here.

Powder coating doesn't seem a good idea for this application it would appear. Porsche never did anything like that.

I don’t want to replace anything. I just want to know if it’s okay to loosen the bolt and rotate the strap clockwise. Or won’t that work?

Yes, that is perfect. It should be the right any way with bolt close to straight up and down when tight. You won’t get that…but get as close as you can.

rs6er 06-22-2024 06:39 PM

Thanks. I tried, but even after opening the bolt all the way, I was unable to rotate much because it was too tight at the bottom.

winders 06-22-2024 10:45 PM

You don't need to move it.

rs6er 06-23-2024 05:36 AM

I wanted to put the original decals back on.

proporsche 06-23-2024 05:47 AM

i would in your case move it to the right.Remove the coil with bracket make the bolt as loose as much as you can and use wood or rubber hammer to turn it to about 3 o`clock.
Of course it would be the best to remove the coil ,the distributor ..this way you would have totally free-moving strap...

You usually see them at 3, 2 and sometimes 12 o clock. I always put them back to their permanently formed position when installed for the first time. Those original bends in the strap don’t go away and it only goes one way.

proporsche 06-23-2024 02:57 PM

gled49 his is 911SC not 3,2 and he likes to put back the decals on it.And no the strap is not prefixed..it is totally straight piece but has bends from being in one place around the alt housing

If they are brand new straps they are straight. If they have been installed, the bends become permanent. I don’t know why people don’t reinstall them the way they were removed. The strap looks like it has a lot of paint on it, the fan housing probably needs to be raised a lot before the strap can be rotated. It will have to be forced.

rs6er: There's a lot of corrosion on the pulley face, in addition to the fan blades. You should sand that off so the fan belt has a smooth surface. I note your location is Bend, OR, which is high desert, but it looks like it spent a fair amount of time in an area that salts the roads in the winter.

I believe, from many years ago, all is not round at the 7 & 5 PM position, so that when you tighten the big round clamp, you actually put a couple permanent "kinks" in the clamp. That said, you may be able to the move bolt apparatus to wherever you like it, but when you tighten it you'll make two new "kinks" (or possibly find the factory originals). If it's in a happy place, I'd leave it alone.

yup, that is what i said;-) in his case would be better to remove the distributor and oil pres.sending unit ,use rubber hammer and make it straight again .After install it so the threads are facing down on the right side or left....

Should I adjustment my fan bracket?

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1719241400.jpg

I assume the bracket next to the oil press sender is for the OEM AC and can be removed?

proporsche 06-24-2024 10:03 AM

Mike your strap is a many 911SC have it.Personally i like to put them to 3 o'clock for better look.Allen bolt threads on bottom section.
You alternator housing looks a little forward maybe you could adjust it?
Yes the a/c bracket you can remove

By forward you mean the top of the housing is tilted slightly towards the front of the car?

You have an excellent view of details, thank you!

proporsche 06-24-2024 01:27 PM

Mike ,come to think of it , looks like your alternator is out of ordinary part, right? It seems that is just a little 2-3mm forward in the housing.I guess you cannot do much with it..
