Clutch chatter

I noticed increased chattering from the clutch when it’s released at idle on my 71T. Nothing has changed in regards to clutch performance & everything feels the same while driving. What would an increased amount of chatter at idle signify?

For me and my 71T it could need a quick clutch adjustment or my dreaded engine out clutch release fork ball. F that thing.

If you have slipped the clutch too much, it can glaze both the disc and pressure plate/flywheel causing chatter. Small amounts of oil as well, but that usually causes slippage. Before you take it apart, see if minor clutch cable adjustments help. Also, how are your tranny/motor mounts?

During my first visit to my air cooled whisperer he asked if i had any issues (seems he like my car from the first view). I told him chattering clutch. We put it up on the lift, he fiddled with the clutch cable and made the chattering better but not gone. He went under a second time and said that was all the adjustment he could do. It was very much better.

I bought the car from Kevin Buckler’s crew chief and we decided to up a Porsche Motorsports clutch in. Big mistake. Don’t know what my mechanic did, but said there is adjustment in the cable to help with chatter.

Adding more curve to the bowden tube can eliminate chatter. The inside of the tube can wear out and drag the cable. Grease on the cable can help, where it goes through the tube. A new clutch assembly, including a flywheel sometimes is the only solution.

Mr Walker, thank you for that description. Hope it helps Smiles. I ultimately replaced the clutch. But I will always remember my mechanic’s attention to detail. Most other shops would have just said buy a new clutch. I drove it another 2 years before replacing
