Help! Window tinter ruined my door
![]() While stripping the 35 year old window tint from my ‘88 Targa, it looks like they may have used alcohol to remove the adhesive. Now the door top trim is stained white (black plastic, not leather covered). Has anyone refinished these? Can’t find them to buy, and mine are in actual good shape. Thanks in advanced.

Just give it a cleaning using a soft brush and sponge with warm dish soap and water. Then apply a good vinyl dressing.
It looks like someone had applied a coating that the alcohol dissolved into. Alcohol will not damage the vinyl.

I agree with others, it may have some goop residue and stripped off any sheen from previous coats of protectant products.
You might want to try some Griot’s Garage ceramic vinyl trim restore before painting. I tried Meguires brand but it’s too shiny whereas Griots is satin matte. These products rub-on paste gel unlike spray-on liquid AmourAll, lasts much longer and is not a greasy film. The vinyl spray paints cannot be top coated with any of these types of appearance products. I used the vinyl spray paints and it’s very durable but noticeably different in texture and color matching to the rest of the original interior vinyls. It may take a bit of work to get it to not look so “new” compared to the old, duller door cards. |

Thank you to everyone that replied, I appreciate the time.
I did try Griot’s Ceramic Vinyl Trim Restore, did a decent job on 2/3rds of the piece, but the area around the door lock is still badly faded.

Perhaps this is the window tinter's problem?
The door tops from factory are vinyl surfaced foam-ish core and should be resistant to all sorts of harsh chemicals. I purchased a 1987 911 Coupe that originally had many of the white interior parts (door cards, console, seats, etc.) painted with vinyl/trim paint and it was easily removed with lacquer thinner. So maybe your tops have been refinished once already?

My god, how did the monkeys that did this think that this was acceptable?!
I am to the point now if someone has to work on my car I'd rather take the thing to be worked on off the car and bring it directly to the person to minimize the risk. In this case I'd probably have taken the entire interior door card off. People can't be trusted with anything anymore. The only positive to come of this is that I'm willing to give most anything a try. It's like, I can screw my car up as bad as these mouth breathers and not have to pay anyone for the privilege of doing so. I'll step off my box and see myself out, but this is just infuriating to me. Sorry to the O.P.

Just replace those pieces on the shop’s dime. Takes seconds to replace them.

Yup its Weystom. I am terrible about taking before pics but here are a couple pics of my interior this car is a weissach so it has doriac grey (I think) interior. It had already been dyed black but only on surfaces you could see, so most of what you can see in these pics is a refresh. But I did take some of the back of the pieces all the way black from the original light color. I just did a lot of coats and a lot of dry time. hope it helps ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Did you ever find out what product the tinted used to remove the tint film?
Your already $20 in for the Griot’s and maybe another $25 or more for a paint or dye, hopefully they shop offered some remedy. I’ll agree that whatever product you use, like the Griot’s Vinyl Restore it will require multiple coats. It also works to revive color and sheen on the hard plastics like your lock bezel trim and knob. If I recall, I stripped my door cards of old Amour-All and the vinyl took on a bit of chalky gray appearance in spots but after repeated treatments they came back to life. Griots looks like it needs to build up a few coats. Good thing is you can call Griot’s direct and speak to someone for more advice, you may even send them your photo too. Also, be aware that now that you used the Griots Ceramic restorer you’ll need to strip it off completely before going to a dye or paint product as a top coat. And again, call them on what to use to clean their product off. |

You could replace the lock parts with new for about as much, maybe less, that you’ve spent to shine them up.
