Mixo Trumpet Horn repair
My short low tone trumpet horn broke off and gone.
It still works but the sound doesn’t seem loud enough compared to the long high tone, I disconnected each and compared the intensity of each horn separately. So I wonder if it’s because of the missing extended trumpet. I’m contemplating cutting off the trumpet portion from this cheapo $25 Harbor Freight air horn kit and inserting it with some JB Weld plastic epoxy into the Mixo after enlarging the opening a bit. It will look ok, the HF horn is very thin plastic but the shape is the best suitable substitute to an original I’ve found, but have no idea if it will increase decibels. Has anyone tried something like this? Any suggestions and before I indulge in this iffy $25 repair, i.e. does anyone have an economical Mixo Stritone for parts? ![]() ![]()

I suggest that you replace those with these...
...and sell me your old broken set for parts to fix mine.

These are the ones that Porsche Classic is having made in Germany by Stritone now as a replacement. I don't know if one would mix the red and black or replace both for consistency.

Krylon makes a red pepper Fusion paint that is great for this.

If you are primarily concerned about function, you can get plug and play Hella Supertones for $50 at Amazon.

Here is what I did in the past for new red factory-like horns.

Thanks guys for the tip and link.
Found a few oem black Mixo’s on the ebay, same prices in the $60 range + shipping so it seems for another $20 a new would eliminate any risk of getting a non-working one. I like the originality of OEM even though it’s a hidden part that’s hardly used. Makes sense buying new and painting it red…then tuck it up a bit higher or turn it another direction, maybe a speed bump, steep driveway or pothole knocked it off. The $25 Harbor Fright horn can go back to the store, maybe one day I’ll find a similar $5 garage sale horn to jerry rig a replacement using the broken Mixo stub. BTW, I know I used a Krylon red to paint the original “DEFROST” (heat) lever knobs that were faded to a light pink. Then a few top coats of clear lacquer and it’s holding up quite well, and the color I used perfectly matched the new later-style replacement knobs. |

The inner diameter of the throat where it is broken is 12.2mm if I recall correctly. I would suggest using a short 1" long piece of metal tubing with a similar I.D. and JB welding a sleeve in the I.D. of the horn pieces joining them together. Obviously bore out the ID of each end of the horn pieces to the O.D. of the metal tube, with a Dremel bit, or drill. Something like a piece of 1/2" copper pipe, or some kind of brass or stainless tubing, not more than 1.0mm thickness that you can search on Ebay.
