1985 Engine died and won't restart...

I took a drive to a local store and drove around a bit after while testing my new AC system (it was in the high 80 degrees outside). When I pulled into the garage and let the car idle, it dropped to just about 2-300 rpm and I could not revive it. It died.

I started the car after a little while and it seemed okay, but was only run briefly.

The next day (today) I was heading out and the car will start, run up to 1,000 rpm or so very briefly and then die. If I keep the fuel pump on longer, then the car starts and runs for a bit longer, but then dies. Nothing I do with the throttle seems to make a difference.

I felt the ICV valve vibrating and I swapped out the DME Relay for one that has the full pump jumper on all the time. It still acted the same.

Fuel filter is relatively new at less than a couple thousand miles.

I am looking for some advise here...what to troubleshoot....

Thanks in advance!

Thank you jlex! I actually just figured it out, and man, did I get lucky.

I have had the fuel gauge reading around half full lately but the low level light has been on. I was thinking the low level light connection in the sender was bad. It turns out that the float was stuck. I ran out of fuel literally in my garage after driving around...how lucky is that? I pulled the sender to troubleshoot it and this is how my tank looks (not bad after 39 years). I pulled the sender apart trying to troubleshoot, but I can't get it to register below 1/4 tank. I think there is too much resistance buildup - I tried cleaning it all, but to no avail. Now I know to trust the light and not the gauge until a new one is installed.

Confirmed...the car needs fuel to run. New sender ordered. In the meantime, I trust the low fuel light and not the gauge!

Well, as long as it didn't run out of oil !

Those senders ... don't they always read 1/4 to half tank full no matter what :)

Sure seems that way...for as long as I remember.
