Should I Title A Front Clip?
 
I’ve inherited a “front clip” to a 1970 T targa that has a COA numbers matched 2.2 engine (not running). This clip is NOT salvageable and rusty throughout. All Vin stamps exist minus the A pillar aluminum plate. The car itself was a donor to another project.

So…Because it’s only worth the vin stamped metal and nothing else, I’m having second thoughts on getting the title. After calling ahead to the DMV it will be a little over 1k in Texas fees to get this in my name (the car retains a clean title). The only reason I would do this is to sell the front clip as a ‘project’ with the engine & the title to help fund future Porsche projects.

My question for the forum: is it worth it to register 1970 metal numbers only to sell them with a non running T engine? And if I do, what is that valued at in your opinion?

I wouldn’t register it.
Even if it were a full running project that I took on with the intention of selling it off or flip. Plenty of people sell cars on more or less “open” titles, e.g. - not in their name, last owner signs but omits buyer info is not recommended in fact illegal, but adding your name to the back of a title doesn’t mean you have to register it - especially if just a shell. You can relinquish ownership by signing it over to a new buyer. Usually there’s room for 3 transfers.

Your inherited project should have some substantiated documentation (title, registrations, will, or probate/court decree) available from owner/estate to alleviate any questions from a prospective buyer.

As for collectibility value, besides matching numbers on eng/trans, it would likely need the A-pillar VIN plate intact to be worthy of saving for restoration values anyway.

I recall a rusted out husk of an early 356 was auctioned off and the buyer intended to use the VIN tag and stamping on a different tub. A different scenario but more valuable car.
