Car Cover Question

All

Unfortunately, I don't have a garage for my 85/911 cab. Fortunately, I am in Santa Cruz, so it isn't a horrific winter, but living 6 houses from the beach means garages are at a premium, which my house does not have. So, I cover it.

I have noticed that my California Car Covers (911, 64 Falcon Cab/347, kids NA Miata) leave a 'residue/film' most noticeably on the windows, but it happens on the paint, too. It is like smudges. Does anyone else run across this? Every time I uncover it, I clean the windshield to get rid of the annoying smudges...

Thanks as always

Jack

I cover my car even though it lives in the garage. I have never had that experience. When you wash the cover are you using a dryer sheet? If is, try it w/o the sheet. Also, glad you cover your 911 as living near the ocean can really accelerate rust on these cars.

Some fabric products may contain silicones but hardly believe it should leave a film. Is the underside have a soft and fuzzy brushed liner or breathable type fabric?

One thing if you live very near to an airport jet fuels and contrail vapors leave behind an overspray film. I worked at international airport, parking was near to runways and if my car was left even a not so busy day, a film would appear on some days more than others. Didn’t realize this until once the dust covered it. Washed off but the longer this film sat the more it accumulated and beaded up the water droplets like a silicon waxing.

Could you have covered an oily car and contaminated the underside of the car cover?

I would wash it to clean out the dirt so it isn’t constantly sanding my finish. Just no dryer as mentioned.

And regarding waterproofing, use 303 FABRIC GUARD WATER REPELLENCY TREATMENT. I wash mine a couple of times a year, air dry and then setup on lawn chairs to treat before putting back in service. Been doing this for last 7yrs for a cover sitting partially under a live oak and mostly afternoon/evening sun. The cover is very faded but still sheds and pools water like when new.

Mine is a CoverCraft cover for a S2000 but also have one for my Carrera.
