Welcome to the forum! I've found lots of help here.
That's an access hole in the tunnel so you can reach the ball joints on the throttle linkage and clutch cable. The carpet covers that hole. There is no block-off plate. There was a center console on some cars that was located above that area, but still no block-off plate. If you haven't found it yet, you'll want the Porsche Classic Parts Catalog: https://www.porsche.com/usa/accessoriesandservices/classic/genuineparts/originalpartscatalogue/ Free PDF download - this is an illustrated parts breakdown of the entire car... I believe Rennline makes a cover, but as fanaudical noted, there was no over from the factory.

Welcome - from a fellow “last of the narrow-bodies” collective.
Removal of the carpet was my first project, good soak in a tub Dawn was needed, as I sought out a few minor interior problems. No need to cover it (if it’s Renn it’s $100) a sheet of stiff plastic or sheet metal will do the same, the RL cover plate is for show in a no-carpeting race car. While you have the area open, take a peek inside and look for broken nylon throttle rod bushings…they’ll appear as crumbled yellowing grease globs. You’ll see the first in that opening. Theres a total 3 of these along the drivers drive tunnel that stabilize the throttle rod which can bind up. Easy replacement but tight quarters, second bush is under handbrake and the third is near couple joint access panel. There are 2 nylon throttle bell crank bushings in the pedal cluster that need inspection too. They disintegrate as well, a bit more critical. Seat removal helps with contortion to facilitate this project. Then there’s a 5/8” vacuum hose for the brake booster, mine was cracked at the band clamp, result loss of vacuum and hard brake pedal. It’s seen by the accelerator pedal and leads to tunnel. Squeaky clutch pedal return spring is common, so oil both of the contact areas where spring attaches. Remove the shifter and check the shift rod bushing and shifter cup too. I see you have dealer installed air conditioning. I removed mine and patched to two cabin openings. Keeps out mice and draft noise from the trunk. |

It looks like maybe a previous owner(PO), just put some random carpet in there.
I believe there should be a rubber mat piece sewn into the carpet over the tunnel in that section which would put a solid part over the hole. Here’s a picture of mine. It is an aftermarket set, but the carpet set it replaced had the mat and I think that was factory. ![]()
