Better choice than foam for fuel tank

After spending countless hours removing the gooey residue that used to be a foam strip, I’m wondering if there’s a better solution than foam for sealing the contact point where the fuel tank connects to the car.

Does everyone just go with the foam?

I ordered the replacement foam strip for mine. When is the next time I’m going to remove the tank? In 30 years? That was my logic. I’m sure you can visit your local Home Depot and get creative with non-stick solutions. After all, the adhesive is a bit overkill. The tank is held in with 3 brackets and shouldn’t move if the bolts are tightened. I think the main goal is to prevent the tank from rubbing on the body so any solution you can come up with to solve that problem will likely work well.

I used some old weatherstrip I had replaced on the car . . seemed more permanent and more waterproof than the foam.

I just did mine with the Porsche foam strip.

It seemed to be pretty good quality closed cell foam, so I have no worries about it absorbing water.
Plus it is squished pretty flat, so I am not at all worried about either water intrusion or the foam absorbing and holding water against the sheet metal.
