Rear Targa top seal

I'm ready to replace the rear Targa top seal, 911 565 091 45, on my '85 Carrera. Pelican shows 3 choices from cheap to expensive. Are there any recommendations on which to get? I will probably avoid the cheapest. My choice is the OEM supplier or the Porsche seal, a difference of over 100%.

For those of you that bought the OEM supplier model, the one priced in the middle, did it have the outer fabric covering where it mates with the rear edge of the door windows like the original seal?

Thanks for any information.

I have bought the OEM and cheapest. Cheapest was a hard pass. The fabric was like a velvet and the rubber seemed too flexible. I decided to return it about 2 minutes after opening the box.

The OEM seal looked much closer to original, but mine was original to the car so no idea what a Porsche seal might look like new. It's okay, but unlike the cheapest seal, the rubber seems too hard and doesn't conform to the back edge of my door glass very well. I have adjusted the window glass, but there's still a small, but definite gap.

The OEM seal would probably work fine if you never plan to drive or park in the rain, and keep an eye on things while washing your car. I'm not thrilled with it and replacing it with a Porsche seal is on my to-do list.

I used the OEM seal and there does not seem to be any issues. I would do it again.

I just did this job a week ago. For some reason, seals, trim, and other rubber bits are fussy with a noticeable difference in quality across suppliers. I didn't want to do (and pay for) this twice if the OEM one didn't work well, so I splurged for the Porsche one.

I just replaced all of the seals on the body involving door-glass and the targa top.

There are a couple places that I strongly considered the Porsche branded seal. The rear targa bar seal is one of them. For that one, I ended up going with the URO brand seal, and I will be direct in saying that it looks OK in my application. Weatherstrips and seals take a bit of maneuvering during install and doing this job while NOT rushing is the key.

Regarding the price of the porsche seals: in some instances, they are unreasonably priced; they should be embarrassed that they would "price" them like this (ie: targa lateral seal).

I captured my experience here on the forum if you do a quick search.

So, it looks like the majority likes the Porsche seal- OUCH! But, we didn't buy these cars not expecting to spend more than normal on parts.

Robey5: A clarification. You state you went with a "Porsche branded seal" and then you said it was from URO. Currently, there are 3 seals from PP: a URO, the cheapest, one from a Porsche OEM supplier at around $250., and the Porsche brand at over twice as much as the Porsche OEM supplier. Which did you use?

Thank to all for your replies.

I went with the URO seal for the targa bar. I strongly considered springing for the P-car brand; but I ended up with the URO one, and I think that the URO seal looks fine.

Quick update on the below two seals: a shop contacted us in November of 2019 and said they're a bit too long (which supports the two reviews left in 2017 on the Pelican site). Our engineers compared them to OEM, and instructed manufacturing to shorten them a bit to match OEM. We're also going to improve the bonding between the rubber and the metal backing strip, and add some internal washers inside the locating holes. These changes should be incorporated in our next production run, which should be Spring 2021.

I just installed the URO targa bar seal and the fit was fine, no issues there. The flocking is a disappointment, it comes off in patches with little use. Long term durability there is a real question. The factory cloth cover is much more durable.

^ Indeed, unfortunately covering the seal with the cloth material simply costs a fortune. Using the cloth would increase the price of the seal to the same as OEM, which is why no aftermarket companies do it. No one would buy the aftermarket seal if they could get OEM for the same price.

but isn't the cloth necessary for the windows to properly roll up and down against the rear seal?

Recall that failing cloth on my original seal precipitated its replacement years ago and I've used original seals since for their cloth

The window glass run channels on most cars have flocking (a fuzzy outer layer) to reduce seal friction. Using cloth is a level above flocking, and is only found on expensive high-end vehicles.

Hi everyone, the redesign of URO Parts Targa Top Seals 911 565 259 40 and 911 565 260 40 was completed in 2023, and the new version should be readily available by now. The updated seals can be identified by code 10293 (or higher) in the bottom right corner of the label. Anyone try them yet?

We found one 5-star review dated 12/13/23 that says, "Perfect fit. Looks and fits just like the OE."
