Re-Painting gas tank

I’m replacing my gas tank and after a few test fits, there are some scratches in the thin paint.

Knowing that it will probably get scratched again, should I spray some rattle can black on the scratched areas, or just keep on keepin’ on?

I just remembered that I need to spray undercoat on the tank!!

Is it usual to spray the entire tank top and bottom, or just the underside?

Does the flange get undercoat as well, or should that be taped off?

Thanks for any information.

This picture is pretty much how an aged original would look. Seems to be coated top to bottom.

I would want the flange coated. That foam seal is a great place to retain moisture, I think you want to protect the flange as much as you can. Especially the edge where the two tank halves come together.

You could use pickup truck bed liner if you are not too concerned with originality. I would have a pro do it though, I've tried the rattle can variety and I think the result is too thin.

I just did mine.

Stripped it down to bare metal by hand.

Took a phosphoric acid naval jelly to any suspicious rust spots.

Sprayed the inside with Fogging Oil for Men to prevent internal corrosion

Sprayed a good coat of Glasurit epoxy primer after etch coat.

Sprayed heavy coat (used one litre) of Sikken OTO Body Coat focussing on the flange bottom and the underside exposed to the road.

I like the Sikkens colour better as my car is totally non-stock and I hate the "body fluid" colour of the natural Glasurit chip guard....and I did not want to apply a top coat.

Here it is....

Thanks guys. I just finished coating top and bottom using POR15 undercoat in rattle cans. Each can did two coats on each half.

It’s not the “period correct” way to do it but….I’ve done several tanks by having a local pick up truck shop put 2 coats on the bottom side, and one on the top (part thats inside the frunk). It’s usually black, and then on one tank I then painted it light gray. After 8 years, the bottom of the tank looks amazing.
