Rear seat take out question
Ok--it looks like there is only one big screw to take out for removing the rear seatbacks and I still cant figure it out. I've removed the two little screws in back that hold the carpet to the back already. Whats the secret? I cranked on the big screw and started to strip the top of it. Maybe I just need a giant screwdriver and a new forearm workout. Any tips?

The secrete...impact wrench. They're a just a motha to get out the first time. Screw Driver ususally doesn't work. You strip it first as you found out. But they do come out eventually.

That is only one BIG screw/seat, take that away and pull the seat out a little bit then the other side of the seat will loose if you pull it in direction against the fenders.
"hope you understand.." /J

Not sure if its like my 87 cab but I have one large flat headed bolt on the outside of the seat that holds the frame of the seat to the inside fender. Then there is a pull-out pin (red button attached) and a pivot stud that simply holds the other side of the seat into a frame that allows the seat to pivot and fold down.
All I had to do was undo the flat headed large bolt and pull the seat left or right (depending upon which seat your doing) to withdraw the pivot pin and pull-out pin from their recesses. Besides this there's only the two screws that hold the carpet to the seats and also one screw that is attached to an elastic strap on the back centre of each seat. Hope this poor explanation helps. If the big bolt is stripping you might have to pull it out and re-tap a new thread and get a new bolt.Good luck. Mark

Doh!!
After re-reading your post, your concern is over the big bolt stripping on its head. I sprayed mine with penetrating liquid the night before I unscrewed it. Used a screwdriver the next morning and a good deal of forearm muscle! Good luck Mark

Use a big socket wrench w/ a socket that will hold a common screwdriver end (like the ones that come with electric drills). Give you the leverage you need.

As said before, an impact driver. If you aren't familiar, you smack it with a hammer and that causes a twisting motion, so because you hit it with a hammer it is probably not going to strip, it has more twisting power, and it is shocking the bolt like an impact wrench. Works like a charm. I got a kit at home depot for 10 or 15 dollars.

Another way is to use a very LARGE screwdriver with a square shaft, put your hip or leg against the butt for pressure, and use an adjustable wrench on the shaft to turn it. The screw comes out easily once you break it free. Worked for me with out the use of penetrating oil.
