Re-plumbing gas tank vent
I replaced the gas tank in my ‘73 Targa and the vent fitting on the new tank is in a different place than it was on the old tank. It’s going to require some re-work and I’m eager for some suggestions.
The easiest way seems to be to shorten the hose coming from the accumulator and flip one of the wye fittings, but I’m guessing they’re oriented in a certain direction for a reason. The attached picture shows where the connections need to be made. Any ideas?

Heres a picture with the wye turned around. As you can see, it’s a much smoother hose run, but I don’t know how much the orientation of those wyes matters.

A basic rule of thumb (in dwv plumbing) the wye is directed towards the flow whether fluid or venting, noting how the wye makes an arrow which indicates the direction you want the flow to run and exit. Interruptions and bottlenecks can occur with opposing junctions.
Does the rule apply to automotive….for instance it’s only the evacuation of fumes that are the concern. When engine vacuum is applied; the fuel tank vents in conjunction to any stored vapors in the expansion tank, then to the rear char canister (mid-years) and eventually to the engine intake, or atmosphere if applicable when not connected to vacuum. The vapor/fumes run in a loop and are supposed to be always contained. Does this photo (source:rennlist) resemble your set up ? -
