Removing the non-operational air conditioning (AC) system from your 911 SC Targa can be a practical decision, especially if you're considering upgrading to a more modern setup in the future. Since the compressor has been inactive for over a decade and the condenser is in poor condition, taking out these heavy components can help reduce weight and potentially improve performance.

However, it's important to consider a few factors before proceeding: ensure that any modifications you make don’t interfere with the vehicle's electrical system or cooling features; keep track of any associated components, such as hoses or brackets, that may need to be addressed; and, if you're planning to restore or sell the car in the future, note that the removal of the AC system could impact its originality or value. Ultimately, if you're comfortable with these considerations, removing the AC components temporarily should not pose significant issues.

I took mine out after an errant hose clamp from my turbo install punctured the condenser. Left room to add an intercooler.
I don't miss it at all. Its a "toy" now, not a daily. I did leave the a/c fan in place as it pushes a fair amt of fresh air thru the vents on hot days, but stripped out everything else.
I also added the fresh air under dash ducts that someone here was selling - they direct air more towards you than the stock.
I wouldn't have a car without heat though, particularly an open car/targa.

Half-measure option... Evacuate the system, as needed (my 1989 came "pre-evacuated" after the decades), remove the BIG stuff, compressor & mount and condensers, cap them off and box 'em up. Cap off the open lines (you can get assorted rubber and vinyl caps from Amazon) and call it good. Lose a lil' weight, gain a lot of access. I did this on my '88 cab for my five years of ownership. When it came time to sell, I installed a new compressor, flushed the condensers & reinstalled them and then had the system filled with new compressor oil and charged with 134a by a an AC shop that specializes in air cooled Porsches. Expensive, but the car was worth it (60k mile '88 M491 / M470 cab). Your car, and mileage, may vary.

Full-measure: pull it all out. I did this on my '89 Sports Purpose build. I did leave the condenser box & blower fan (upgraded to Kuhl hurricane blower) for fresh air through the center vents.

Both of my 1987s have had barrier hoses installed and various components upgraded and blow COLD. It's the ultimate luxury in a G Body.

The key questions are:
1. Do you have a wife or girlfriend?
2. Do you want her riding in the 911?
If the answer to both is yes, fix the AC.

Oh, yeah, two 86's, in southern Texas, both with AC deletes. Wife throws on a ball cap and we drive, windows down, even in the summer. Makes the BBQ, winery and/or distillery AC feel that much better when we get there. I am 55 she is 40, for reference, so we aren't spring chickens...rain and coastal humidity may be a different beast. I like the access to the engine bay with the delete.

Delete for a bit and if not your thing...do the modern version. That actually has my vote.
