Valve cover gasket glue
After fighting to get my valve covers off, I was wondering, are they supposed to be glued? What do you use? Will they seal well enough without a sealant? I still have original valve covers on my 2.4 based engine, does that make a difference? Thanks, Michael

As far as I know, they're definitely not supposed to be installed with a sealant. (I use the thick red silicone Real Gaskets, which certainly aren't supposed to be sealed, but I don't think the conventional ones should be either.) The secret to valve-cover sealing seems to be 1/starting out with true, flat valve covers and dressing them to be true if they aren't, and 2/careful, systematic, relatively light torquing to the proper values of the nuts, to avoid warping the fairly flexible valve covers.

Thanks, Stephan. These were glued with a kind of brown glue. They were a little hard to remove. I have a set of gaskets from the dealer not the silicone ones. I'll get a set of them next time. These are green and grey. I'll check my covers with a straight edge. Thanks, again. Michael

Michael,
a good upgrade for your car is to get the turbo valve covers. I got some and no more leaks.

Be sure to remove all the old sealant. Sealant should not be used. Find someone with a REALLY BIG belt sander, one of those table-sized things, and use it to gently ensure the sealing surface is straight.

I had that brown stuff too - made it really hard to get the covers off. Cleaned it all off and installed the new ones without and there are no leaks at all. One of the previous owners installed turbo covers at some point.
