Cooling Fan and Housing Coating

Hey all. I知 about to pull the trigger on a replacement magnesium fan housing from Carpoint and fan from our host. I知 concerned about the new raw magnesium parts corroding. I have reached out to Shawn at Tru-6 for Cerakote which is the front runner. I知 wondering if there is another option similar to the wax or cosmoline that Porsche used. Thanks!

When i had my alternator out i cleaned my fan with scotchbrite grey pad and coat it every year with ACF50. Holding up well after 6 years. Not as pretty as tru6 ceracote housing was just painted and is chipping.

Lots of people spray Cerikote. It’s no longer a specialty service.

Just installed a new magnesium fan on my 993 yesterday. It comes out of the box with some type of paint or coating on it, or so I thought. It is exactly the same color as the old original fan. Other than a different color preference why would you need to refinish a new fan?

Funracer, any photos of your new 993 fan? Is it OEM?

You can get cosmoline in a spray can but note that "cosmoline" is a general term these days. Any cosmoline brand you find, check with the manufacturer if it's safe for magnesium. Here's one product:

Cosmoline RP-342 Heavy Rust Preventative Spray (Military-Grade) 1-Can

It's unclear from your post, did I do a fan and housing for you in Cerakote? Please let me know and post pics here or send via email if I did so I can see what happened and fix it. Thank you.

@dg567

New from Suncoast. Forgot to take a pic before install but the part number of the new one was the same as the old one pictured below except it ended in 13R instead of 2R.
It came with the fan bushing already installed.

Not sure what caused the blades on the old one to hit the shroud. Only thing I changed was the fan and belts and so far its running clean.

Update for ya値l!

As much as I wanted to have Shaun coat my new parts, my engine compartment isn稚 up to match that bling. I did take a swing with the cosmoline product linked. I figured I could strip it if I didn稚 like it but I do like how a light coating turned out. I知 sure it will get a bit dirty with time but I知 okay with that. It will match the rest of the engine bay patina. Thanks all for the input!

Glad that worked out for you, the light coating looks good and will go far in protecting the Mg.

Question on this. When you Cerakote the fan, what do you do about the pulley insert (the steel center that appears to be riveted in)?
