Door & Fender reassembly sequence?
So I am at the point with my rebuild that I am ready to start re-installing the doors and fenders on my 911SC after a repaint. Question for those who have been there before - what is the consensus on the best sequence, meaning fenders first then doors, or vice-versa? I had planned to install the fenders first, but have seen a few threads where people removed/re-installed fenders without removing the door. There may not be a right vs. wrong way to do it, but before I jump in and start, I thought it would be helpful to see if anyone had any suggestions on which to start with.

Doors first. The power window harness male connector plugs into the receptacle in a very tight space under the fender. It’s going to be very hard to plug it in with the fender on the car.

Restoration vs manufactured. When originally built the fenders were fit to doors as doors were fit to quarters, hood was also fit to cowl and fenders. Once established doors removed and spaced away from a pillar for paint. Fenders stayed on. In restoration , the concern is getting paint everywhere on fender and mating surfaces. As we see the result of rust. It is easier to paint a fender off the car, but the care of fresh paint mounting of the fender is troublesome. For perfect lines and no messing about, prepaint the edges, fit the fender and pull the door pins. Paint the doors off, leave the fenders on. Pull the hood off.

If the SC has the same bolt at the top of the A post as my 70, you'll have to fit the fenders first because the door will block access to that bolt.

Loz is correct. Although we do manage to tighten that bolt with a universal on the 1/4 drive. A loose universal can be remedied with masking tape.
Those two bolts need to remain loose along with the last one under the hood by the hinge, this allows the cowl to fender seal to pushed in after painting. |
