1968 Door Mirror Authenticity

Here's another new guy question...

My 1968 has what appears to be an earlier mirror on the door. I can't see out of it from the driver's seat and it is mounted over an area that used to be covered by a larger seal.

Does anyone have a picture of the correct 1968 door mirror they can post? Was this one of those '68 only things I've heard about?

Thanks.

Got a bigger picture? From the tiny one it looks the same as the one on mine.

Mine's worthless, too... I'm going to ditch originality in favor of being able to see...

I only have that one picture with me now. Tonight I'll take a better one. I know the mirror is there because I see it when I get in the car but otherwise it's an earring on the old girl. It serves no purpose.

Is that how these were?

I believe the correct mirror is a Durrant mirror it looks very similar to what you have now, they may even be.

I have a simmilar mirror mounted in the same place, you need to lean out the car to use the mirror pratically. I got use to it fast.

Something is goofy with it. I'll post some pics tomorrow and we'll see if that helps identify it. It does say 'Durant" on it but I thought those were '67 and earlier mirrors.

I think the bases differ between the '65-'67 and the '68 and later mirrors. That's my guess anyhow...

I've owned two 68's and yes that is the correct mirror. Another problem with them other than you can't see out is the mirror itself will fall out. Both of mine did.

68's are the step child of the 911's but what a beautiful step child.......

I have the durant mirror, and only on the driver side too. i think you get used to it after time.

if I may, can I ask another question on top of this question (it is so rare to have 68s all one post) what are your temp readings lately? My needle is higher this year for some reason. It used to get only over the "80" in severe, hot, long driving conditions. This year I am constantly between the 80 and 100. is this getting too hot? Where are you guys?

Here's a much better picture. Is this the right mirror for a 1968?

durants differed in the following:

65-67 3.5" mirror no lip

68+ 4" with lip around mirror

can you get a pic of the actual mirror part?

My engine temps read between 190 and 210 when she's warm. It moves around in there depending on the air outside and what type of driving I do.

I'm assuming you mean oil temps. I have no other gauge that measures temperature.

As for being a stepchild... I purposely wanted a '68. It's still the SWB which I like but it has the newer better looking gauges. Plus on a '68 you can have the 'S' look and trim without the 'S' price. That 'L' separates us from the rest of the early 911 crowd. You know the Fuchs weren't added, you know all the upgrade stuff is standard. The Ls have their own mystique. If I didn't have one, I'd find one.

I really wasn't aware of the 1 year only stuff until I had it home but after restoring a Type 34 Ghia this thing will be a piece of cake.

Temp Readings

My gauge does not have the numbers and I am still trying to figure out what the temp is based on where it is on the gauge. If the gauge was 1 to 10 scale I run at about a 4 after driving for a long while. To tell you the truth the warmer she gets the better she runs. I am in California (on the coast) where it is supposedly hot. Should I have numbers on my temp gauge is your gauge original?

I just got a 1968 brochure which shows the L from various angles including the dash. My gauge matches the photos in there....with digits. Mine was among the first 100 built for 1968 so maybe it was an early thing that changed.

As for where the needle sits on the gauge, ours sound exactly the same. I am between the the 4 and 5 if it were on an even 10 scale.

The oil pressure floats b/w 40 and 60 if I remember right. The oil level gauge is pretty worthless..always flat unless I'm on a hill or weird incline. Fuel seems to be right. Speedo needle bounces and ratchets. Tach is smooth and happy.

And of course, my weather gauge...

Pic of Gauges?

Any one have a pic of the gauges on a 68? I couldn't imagine going from numbers to no numbers on a gauge, and my gauges are not older than a 68 since they are the newer style gauge that came out in 68.

Thanks guys, I'll upload some pics as well. Maybe we can start a 68 comparison thread, and we can sort out all our Q's and generate even some more Q's.
