Best adhesive for engine sound pad?
What have you guys been using for the engine sound pad installation? I used the 3M "Super Trim Adhesive" for my carpet and trim install with great results. Will it be OK with the heat?

I use 3M 90 spray adhesive. 77 works fine also. They're basically contact cement, like Weldwood, like your carpet stuff.

I used 3M spray adhesive as well. Works great!

I had poor luck with the 3M.
Had to go back and used High Temp Engine Compartment Adhesive Spray. No issues since then. Maybe I didn't use enough 3M ?

I have used the 3M 08090 super trim adhesive for 40 years and it has always performed well when used correctly. You have to apply adhesive to both surfaces, the blanket and the engine compartment and let tack slightly before final install.
I always prefit the blanket adjusting for a good fit, then drop the blanket down horizontal and suspend with a stick and then a good coverage coat on both surfaces, you pretty much only get one shot with this method but it has never failed me. I use about 3/4 of a can per blanket for full coverage. If you use the 3M spray trim adhesive and not the 08090 super trim the blanket will come unglued pretty quickly. Richard ![]() ![]() |

Thanks everyone. I used the 06080 on my carpet and that's the can that I have ready for the sound pad. Looks like I'm good to on the adhesive. I still need to fit and trim the piece, and see if I can get it in without removing the entire (3.2) intake from the engine for access. I will definitely remove the air filter, AFM which should give me enough room.

Might be that I'm in Texas and it gets really hot here.
Mayo Performance are the guys that told me to use Wurth. They know their stuff.

I glued magnets to the back of the pad. It is much easier and after 13 years it looks great. I have numerous. “ Porsche experts” look at my pad and they can not tell the difference. Safe yourself some time and aggravation glue on the magnets and stick it to the metal

I realize this idea sounds weird. I am very particular about the repairs on my 911, every thing is by the “book”. Everyone recommended a partial engine drop and scrape all the old adhesive off of the engine bay. I was looking for any easier fix. I went to Home Depot and bought round magnets about one inch in diameter and about 1/4 inch thick. I used super glue. If you are showing your car at Pebble Beach this will not work, but other than that it will work very well. It does not look or sound different. We are trying to get a piece of foam to stick to metal, not increase horsepower or improve handling

I used the 3M super weatherstrip adhesive, because it was handy. Still holding tight after 5 years.

I am going to try the magnet approach. I ordered a 24 pack of 1" x 1/32" think neodymium magnets. I was dreading the install as Richard pointed out you get one shot with the contact cement and without a full engine drop that is going to be difficult to get it placed properly before it's too late.
Magnets should be here next week, will post how it works after I've given it a try. |

I used the magnet technique and it looks fantastic. You can't tell it's not glued on. I'll never have to clean that horrible glue off the firewall ever again!

No, I scraped off the old foam that was sticking to the metal. Vacuumed the old foam bits from the engine compartment and put the pad up. It took about 20 minutes

I think it was gorilla glue, nothing special. I glued them on and let it set over night. They are still stuck on after 13 years
