Rear brake light only working one side or another - Wiring Issue?
Last night I unfortunately received a ticket for malfunctioning brake lights while driving home.. but to my surprise it seems that I do not simply have a dead bulb that needs replacing, but perhaps some screwy wiring that needs to be sorted. As you can see from the two photos I've attached, the photo with the driver side brake light illuminated (open palm) is when I am depressing on the brake pedal, and the photo with the passenger side light on (fist) is when I have let go of the brake. Both left and right brake light will not illuminate at the same time, one while I am braking, the other when I am not. Both photos are with headlamps on. Has anyone encountered this before? Any ideas? Thank you!

One of the dual filament bulbs installed incorrectly?
Passenger side would be my guess. |
Any recent work done to the vehicle?
It's almost like you are missing the ground on the pass side. Do the sidemarker and turnsignals function? Are running lights on both sides the same brightness? They appear to be different but pictures can be deceiving. Check the bulb like Timmy said. On both brake/running light bulbs, when on brake or running, are both filaments lit? |
I second the poor ground theory. And thumbs down to the cop who gave you that lame ticket. How does one know when a bulb is out ?

I had trouble with my rear lights. There was no grommet where the cable passes through the car body. All of the contacts in the bulb holder were also corroded. Lastly there was a fault drawing down the battery. I took it apart and discovered all this and then fixed it

The bulb-socket ground contact can never be discounted. Here's the brake bulb off my 930. The socket looked the same. Took a bit of work to clean the socket enough for LEDs to light up consistently.

Check and see if any of the side markers are coming on with the brake light or vice-versa.
We had a client stick a single filament tail light bulb in the dual filament brake light socket which caused the brake lights to stay on with headlights, and the left side markers to come on with the brake pedal. |
