thoughts on the 996

So I'm new to the Porsche world having just bought mine a month ago. As you all predicted, I've become addicted. I love the rumble of the engine, the feel of the road and even the notchy 2nd gear of the 915 transmission. Last week I was behind a brand new, still-have-dealer-plates on, 996. It was shiny and sleek but it didn't seem as robust as my '79. I mean, I heard a buzzing whine when I should have heard it growl. As I pulled up to it, the interior looked plastic, not unlike certain Japanese cars. Lastly, when the driver got out and closed his door, the unmistakeable heavy thud was missing. I dunno, it just doesn't look and sound like a 911 anymore. What do you think?

Congratulations!

You have cracked the code!

You have not been fooled by the Porsche marketing dept!

It is not a 911!

Having recently replaced an ignition switch in a 996, (electrical portion) I'd have to agree.

This thing was entirly plastic. And I mean cheap plastic! I've seen higher quality parts come out of vending machines.

The part cost 5 dollars. FIVE DOLLARS!!!! It was worth every penny, but definitely not a penny more. Pure crap.

My '72 still has the original ignition switch in it. 31 years later, and still going strong. The Boxster and 996 will eventually ruin porsche's reputation as a fine, long-lasting, hand-built, old-world crafted work of art.

They are vending machine mentality now, and it will show soon. Hell, it's already starting to!

I have a friend who owns a 986. He knows next to nothing about his car or about Porsches in general. Heck, he doesn't even know what grade oil is in his engine because the dealership takes care of it for him. Before I bought my car, I logged onto this BBS, got some great advice and did a lot of research on my own. I think if you're gonna buy an expensive sports car or any car for that matter, you ought to do your homework. I don't think I would've bought a Boxster or a 996 even if I could afford it just because it's not as solid as say a Z4, IMHO.
