Oil Temps...look at this gauge...1968

Here is my temp gauge. Where on this gauge would you start to think it's getting too hot? This post started in another regarding temp gauges etc. I know most of you say close to 225-250 is too hot. For years my needle sat at the 80 mark until blistering heat or long drive and then it would creep past. Now it is "usually" above the 80 and on blistering days closer to the 100. Weather is not that different from other years so why now? I did have a MAJOR service over the winter...different timing? too lean?

Yep! it works. That was on the way TO blockbuster last night. I had justed started out. On the way home from Blockbuster it was at the 80 mark. My car is actually one of the featured cars in the Brett Johnson book on authenticity (i forget the pages it's on but it is in there) so I am pretty sure everything is correct. any thoughts?

10 to 1 your gauge is in degrees Celsius and we are usually talking about Fahrenheit (hope I spelled that right). Anyway, often we are using the later model gauges with the marks at 60, 90, 120, and 150 Celsius which translates roughly to 150, 200, 250, and 300. So on your gauge 120 is too hot.

Your gauge is calibrated in Celsius degrees. 100 degrees Celsius equals 212 degrees Farenheit. So, 100 is still okay. 120 is pretty hot. Too hot.

Considering that 80 deg. C. is 176 deg. F. and 100 C. is 212 F., I wouldn't consider it as runing too hot. Sorry, i have no idea why your, previously, "normal" temperature has changed.

80 is about 180 deg F, which would be really good, and 100 is 212 which is again completely acceptable.

My celsius to farenheit conversion is a little rusty but i believe that 100 celsius is ~ 212 farenheit. The numbers given that state 225 to 250 is too hot is in farenheit. Now if you get up to 120, then i'd be hella worried cause that about ~248.

Man thats the difference with these modern engines... my S4 runs at 225-250 normally, and frequently hits 275-300 on certain tracks!

Its going to take me a while to get used to this 911!

Really dude, my mom's 99 mercedes truck run's with the ac on at 90 C which is 194. Or do you mean oil temp, cause i do know that the modern engines are designed to be run with synthetics which means slightly smaller passages but capability of sustained high oil temp due to high break down temps of synthetics.

Oil temp is what the thread is about, so yeah, thats what I was talking about... The 2.7t hits 225 degrees within three or four minutes of being started most of the time.

It makes changing the oil an adventure. Its still hot enough to burn badly hours after turning the engine off.

seriously? you know I often think about that. where should i be? It is 1968 911L with a standard 2 liter, sportomatic tranny. For a Blockbuster video run (approx 8 miles round trip how does this one look? Should I always be sitting up closer to the 3K mark?

Someone post some WAV files or MP3's of what the 911L engine sounds like at 2k, 3k, 4k, 5k, and 6k rpm... my tach is busted, and I've got no idea if I'm cruising along at 2k, 3k, or I'm running at the redline!

The owners manual for my 84 says minimum upshift is something in the range of 2500 to 2800 for all gears. My car seems to like 3000 to 4500 around town.

Time To Downshift

Are you in third gear at 40 mph? I try to keep the rpm's above 3K, look in your manual and it will tell you min. shift points to prevent lugging the engine. If you don't have one shoot me an email and I will give you the info out of mine (not with me now). I don't have a spoto manual (not sure if there was one?) but the same rules apply to the regular 4 speed. The engine is probably old and should be cared for but these engines were built to be high revving so Punch it like john said.

yep, 40 in 3rd. it just "seems" to be comfortable there? thanks for all the feedback here (particularly the PUNCH it...classic!). I will bust out the manual and revise my habits. this truly is a warm fuzzy place.. not 2 days ago i was on Audiworld.com solving a problem and I get the usual "RTFM" (read the fukking manual) and other witty comments always left by someone who wont leave their email address. speaking of Audis, dotorg how does the L stand up to that S4...pretty close i bet! (insert winking emoticon here)
