Porsche Classic Radio Issue
Just finished installing a Porsche Classic radio in my 1986 Carrera. It replaced a JVC unit I had professionally installed when I bought the car 24 years ago. The only mod I had to make is the harness from the JVC unit to the Porsche unit. Everything works great and sounds good. Took the car to a car show yesterday and something weird happened. After about 30 minutes of driving, the radio shuts off and does not restart unless button pushed. Happened every 30 min of driving. There is no setting for an auto shut off to adjust. Any thoughts on this issue?

I’m having a similar problem with the one I bought for my Cayenne. . . Abut it doesn’t happen as frequently as yours.

Sounds like the radio is not getting a ACC/ignition on signal on pin 7 so it shuts off automatically thinking the engine isn’t running?

I thought of that and double and tripled checked the connections. The radio operates on ACC when car is off and verified Pin 7 wire is the ACC input via multimeter—ie no power when key off, power when ACC selected without car running.

maybe voltage regulator acting up? Radio shutting itself off - detecting over voltage.

thats what I have read could be the culprit—hope not. Not similar issues with old radio. Also, it shuts down at exactly the same time—30 minutes. crazy

If you go into set -> general settings -> standby you should have a choice of 5, 15 or 30 minutes. Presumably your car is set to 30; set it to 15 and see if the radio shuts off after 15 minutes. If yes it really does suggest your ACC feed is not live when the engine is running. |

I will check that out—interesting possibility.

So here is what I have determined might be the problem. First, radio shuts off automatically after 30 mins of being on. I can set the standby to 5, 10, or 30 minutes which allows me to simply press the on/off switch and it comes right back on without the intro and continues to play music or navigate where it left off. Will again shut off after another 30 min. When the car is off, I can turn the key to the ACC position and the radio will not turn on. If I turn the key to the run position, radio will turn on and will remain on even if I move key back to ACC position. Can start car and radio continues to work but after 30 minutes shuts off. I guess my ACC feed is somehow being interrupted or something. Also, checked charging system and no irregular readings so I know its not the regulator on the alternator.

My suggestion would be to double check the wiring for the radio and that something didn’t get mixed up with the ACC, antenna trigger and/or illumination wires.

agree…..going to pull everything out and recheck connections and will also hook my multi-meter up to to the ACC feed to see if it is losing power after start up.

Also, check and make sure that the ground wire has a solid connection, i.e., a low resistance reading to a known good ground. I’d also wiggle the harness while you are checking this and the other items mentioned above to detect if there’s a connection problem.
