Steering Wheel Shaft length
Hello Pelican Brain Trust,
I’ve got an 88 911 and I’ve replaced the OE four spoke Carrera steering wheel with a four spoke Carrera hub extended steering wheel. I had Dallas Steering wheel make the grip thicker otherwise it’s stock. I’ve owned the car for 8 months and the nut holding on the steering wheel was rounded so I replaced it with a thicker nut (twice as thick as original) to provide the socket more gripping surface. It’s much easier to tighten. I’ve noticed the four spoke has a little less room to navigate the socket due to the smaller opening in the center of the steering wheel as compared to a OEM three spoke steering wheel. I had zero issues trying to keep the socket on the nut with a three spoke steering wheel. My question - Did Porsche extend or elongate the steering wheel shaft to account for the extended hub or are they the same length on all 87-89 911’s? The steering wheel shaft threads don’t completely fill up the thicker nut. I don’t believe this will be an issue as long as it’s tight and I’ll check it occasionally? What say you and thanks for your time reviewing my question. ![]() ![]()
