oil breather gasket without engine removal

I have a 1972 911 MFI and I want to tackle the triangle of death. I have read that you can't change the oil breather gasket without engine removal because of the engine lift ring getting in the way. Is this true for a 72 as it looks to me like I could manage it with the engine in the car.
