Want a Commemorative Edition 1988 Badge?

I finally found one of the Commemorative Edition (1988 diamond blue) badges that belongs on the glovebox. The badge is about 2 inches in diameter (bigger than I thought it would be) and appears to be antique nickle plate over brass with a clear laquer coating. The badge I have is a ROW one- it has "1987" whereas the USA version had "MY88".

Just looking through the posts on this site and searching for a copy, it would seem most of the badges are missing. I called around to a couple of coin makers to see what it would cost to have copies made either out of the same material, or out of sterling silver. Most have a minimum purchase and set-up fees, but for a small number of badges (around fifty) the cost would be about $100 each for sterling (based on today's cost of silver, may change a bit by the time we execute) or about $40 for solid nickle or nickle plate, and the badges could be mixed and matched in order to get to the 50 minimum since it is the same die regardless of material. I would also have the date changed on the die so the badge would look like the US version vice the ROW version.

Anyhow, if anyone is interested in having a badge for their CE, send me a PM with what type (nickle, nickle plate or sterling) so I can get a rough idea if having them made would be worthwhile- no commitment just a head count. If there is enough people who want the badge and would be willing to comit prior to me signing a contract, I'll do all the legwork and supply the sample. I have no interest in making any money on the deal; I just want to be able to know I can get rid of all of them and not lose any money.

I sent a letter to Porsche asking permission (I don't want to violate any copyright), but have not heard anything back yet. I also got permission from Wayne to post this prior to doing so.

I'll keep a running count too of responses and if I get close to the "50" magic number I let everyone know. Once I have 50 or close to it, I'll go back to each individual to see if they are willing to comit $ before I have them made. If I don't get enough numbers in the next thirty days or so (by April 2008), I'll re-calculate the cost and see if there is still interest with those who responded.

Best-
Matt

Attached is what the badge looks like:

Matt,

Sounds great and count me in for whatever version that is most voted for. The few that I have seen sell for way more than the cost of the sterling version.

Thanks

Michael-
I can get any of the three materials made- your choice and as many as you like, if I can get all 50 (in any combination) spoken for...just let me know your preferences and I'll start counting!

Me personally, I'd like an antique nickle one for the car and a sterling one for the bookshelf.

Matt

Sure, I'll take one for the desk if you get enough for an order. You might want ot post a link to this thread on some of the CE threads (here and Rennlist) from the past several years. Lot's of CE owners are probably still subscribed to them but might miss this one.

Thanks Michael- been to busy to get the other posts linked!
There is a swap meet here in Tampa this weekend and I think there are two other CEs locally- one is a Peilcan and one not, so I might be able to get them in...

Sorry, no anniversary badge- finding the CE was a big enough pain!

I'll see if I can't get a better photo.
We are up to nine...need about 41 more takers- otherwise the per unit cost is going to be steep. $850 is the die cost alone.

Hi,

I'd be interested in at least one (more if needed to make up the numbers), I don't mind, silver or nickel. I'm really more interested in the ROW one (1987) but I'm happy to take whatever is available.

All the best,
Eamon H.
