Timing Mark Sender - what actually plugged in here?
 

My 84 has a diagnostic timing mark sender on the flywheel in addition to the reference and speed sensors. The timing mark sender is wired to a connector in the front of the engine and was presumably used for measuring engine RPM and maybe ignition timing.

The connector is circled in the picture below.

This sensor and connector don't do anything related to the operation of the engine and many have removed them.

I have two questions:

1. Has anyone actually seen the device that Porsche plugged in here or have any pictures? Or have one? I'd like to see the actual device they used.

2. Where can I get the connector that plugs in here? I'd love to be able to use this for measuring RPM when adjusting engine idle speed. If I have the connector, I can create a small harness to wire it up to my multi-tester to get RPM. The connector is really small and I can't robustly connect to it with alligator clips.

Any ideas on how to make a connector for this?

That was for a factory diagnostic tool. It was used for tool to detect TDC and measure ignition timing. I've never come across anyone outside of the factory utilize it for anything. My 928 also had the exact same sensor, which i removed in its entirety.

If you’re just looking for a connector and not the tool itself, you can likely easily 3D print a housing. Then you can use an oscilloscope to decode the signal.

You are missing the cap on this connector. They easily tear off and get lost.

It's the same plug as an O2 sensor
