Porsche Crest 1976 930 Speaker Installation (shouldn't be this hard)

My 1976 Porsche 930 had the original door speakers/grills removed and aftermarkets put in their place. I'm attempting to return it to original and have bought 2 OEM speakers and original grills (pictured below). I get that the speakers can be screwed into the door but don't understand how the grill covers are attached. The grills have 4 very basic plastic ~ 1/4" pegs that don't seem to go into anything. Am I missing a part between the grill and the speaker or am I not doing something very obvious?

The speakers shown are the ones I removed and the grill is the original 1976 grill.

Help please

You need 8 of these to secure the speaker grill to the door card

If you can get the grills to fit over the infinity speakers you should . . much better sound than OEM.

that speaker looks very deep compared to the typical replacement speakers I've fitted.

I am getting ready to do this in my '74. Did you (or anyone) chose to add the speaker housing (used in later 911s) when upgrading the speakers in your middie 911? If so, how did that work out? Could you still fit with the stock middie covers?

Throw away those speakers. Look closely and you will see that the foam surround on the cone has deteriorated and fallen apart. You need new speakers.

Foam surrounds on the speaker cones only last about 10-12 years, then disintegrate. To avoid this, choose speakers with butyl rubber surrounds. Yes, they are typically more expensive, but higher quality speakers have them.

Question for 1976 Turbo:
What is the actual outer diameter of the factory grill? I looked everywhere I could for that information but couldn’t find anything. Was hoping to find a dimensional drawing but no luck. I do see your photo with the ruler but cannot really determine the diameter with accuracy due to the placement of the ruler.

I’m about to do replace my door panels/cards and speakers and plan to buy the original style grill just as you have. I ordered a pair of inexpensive 6 1/2” Kenwood speakers last night. My plan is to attach the speakers directly to the metal door and attach the grill only to the door card with the little clips as shown above. Grills on the door cards will simply overlay the speakers.

6 1/2’s fit if you remove all the factory bits and don’t use factory grilles.

5 1/4 will fit as per factory, including grilles, if they aren’t very deep.
