I track a 911 and do 8-9 events a year. My crew are my 2 pups that accompany me and are no good at timing, due mostly to their lacking thumbs. Looking for a device that would allow me to download my times at the end of a session. I don't need a lot of other features, but would like from time to time to be able to see my lap times. Any suggestions. Thanks, Bob

Garmin Catalyst is a very popular solution. It's completely self contained, requires no changes to the car. It's often $899 on sale. It does a lot more than only lap times.

Alternatively, you can use phone apps for much cheaper, but I found you get what you pay for.

AIM is the de-facto data solution if you want data, more analysis, more video, and more flexibility.

For cheaper, could you point a video camera at a stopwatch that also would be in view of the finish line and then just review the video after?

I use TrackAddict from HP Tuners. I use the free version. It runs on an old Android phone I have mounted in my race car. It uses the phone's GPS to record your lap times and display them on the phone while you are driving so you can get an idea how you are doing. It will give you pit speed warnings and predicted lap times. The driving display is customizable, but it starts out something like this:

If you have a car with OBD2, TrackAddict can use the bluetooth on the phone to collect and log the OBD2 data from an OBD2/Bluetooth module.

It will work fine in a phone with no SIM card or service.

If your phone has active service, TrackAddict can broadcast your track position, lap times and OBD2 telemetry to a web site. So that others can monitor your progress.

We use this feature extensively during races. We always have someone in the pit station monitoring the telemetry from the car along with another app that shows our overall race standing and this person talks with the driver over the radio to alert the driver if they see an issue in the telemetry such as high coolant temps or low fuel level.

Here is a screenshot of the web site where it broadcasts the data. The data is more or less live with very little lag from the car to the screen.

If all you need is lap times, TrackAddict + just about any old phone will do, with or without service. The OBD2 telemetry, live broadcast, etc., are options that you do not have to use.

I have been very happy with RaceBox Mini. There are are 2 versions. The Mini S does not need a constant phone connection. Apps using your phone's internal GPS are not quite as accurate. Harry's LT would give me timing errors even when coupled to an external GPS module.

TrackAddict and Harry’s LapTimer are what I use. Both capable of video, lap time, segments, etc.

Give them a try before you buy something crazy.
