oil cooling question
I'm looking for suggestions for better oil cooling besides replacing my trombone with Carrera type because of the cost. Has anyone tried the Cool collar? How about the finned cooler that replaces the S Hose by Performance Products? I thought about the front bumper scoop but I really don't want to mess up my car's profile. Two weeks ago I took the car out for a couple of short high-spirited runs in 95 degree weather. On the third trip out, my car wouldn't start. It tried to turn over but no game. Left it alone for 30 minutes with the hood open in the shade and she fired back up. My oil temp gauge has no numbers so I don't know what the actual temp was but I figure it was just too hot. Am I barking up the wrong tree?

Given that you already have all the expensive infrastructure in place due to your trombone, adding a Carrera cooler is relatively inexpensive. It will be far more effective in both dollar terms and absolute terms than any of the other options you are considering.
The cooler is under $400 and if you want to go cheap, build your own brackets and stone guard.

Thanks for the advice Chuck. I'm no mechanic so I'm trying to determine if I should leave the installation of that cooler to one more skilled. The most I've ever done myself to my other cars (non-Porsches) are oil changes, replace brake pads, alternator and water pump. Should I tackle this? Wayne's project book gives this a 4 mechanic rating. I've love to DIY to save $$ but don't want to screw it up either. I know what the parts cost now but what would a shop charge for this job?

Another slightly less expensive option is to go with the Mocal kit. I think it's about $279. Same radiator style cooler as the Carrera and it comes with all the mounting hardware, oil lines, etc. It really needs a fan added to work really well, but those are cheap (something like a Spal fan) and easy to install.
My Mocal cooler with fan keeps my 240hp 3.2 at 80C (176F) in 90 degree weather (street driving). Mike

I would not assume that the hot restart problem will be solved with an oil cooler upgrade. It could also be due to a fuel injection problem (leaking accumulator, weak fuel pump, leaking fuel pump check valve, etc.) or an electrical problem (such as a connection/joint within the ignition system opening when hot and then reclosing when the engine cools). Spending $500 on a oil cooler upgrade and still having the problem would be frustrating and expensive. Cheers, Jim

As stated above a hot start problem can be anything from an injection issue, a bad ground strap/dirty battery terminal to a defective starter. If you are having oil temp issues then a cooler is in order, otherwise it sounds like you might have other issues. Search the archives for the specifics on the no-number temp gauge, but anything higher then ~10-11 o'clock on the dial is considered pretty hot.
Best of luck! |
